Hi!
I have been having issues starting SSMS 18 as I keep getting this message:
Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Shell (Isolated) - Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application
I went to see a new version and found the Preview v19. I removed v18 and installed the preview. After successful Install (and later Repair) I get the same dialog box (once setup completes successfully). And after rebooting the PC, I'm not able to run as per the image above.

I was able to resolve this issue with the help of this post.
After a reboot, Management Studio is running successfully... thanks!

this fixed it for me. I'd previously installed the 22H2 update for win 11, then used that ViVeTool utility to enable tabs in file explorer per instructions found elsewhere. That must've been what broke SSMS for me.

First off to the people at Microsoft: I have watched during my life time as your company has gone from pinnacle to freaking trash, it's amazing. How do you make world class products at one point that get worse not better with time? You can't even make a comment on here through an I pad. I've had to sign in over and over to just get to this field your stuff so incredibly hard to use. And your Windows 10 is a nightmare. Just a complete nightmare. Its worthless. And this Visual Studio doesn't even work. How is that possible? Do you not realize that this thing is worthless!?! Now to the person who wrote the comment, how do you enter this stuff into command prompt? It says 'vivetool is not recognized as an internal or external command.' I typed in everything you wrote. You wanna maybe give more of an explanation then three lines? Maybe explain, just slightly how this is entered into the command prompt? I have NEVER seen such poor instructions on anything in my life. It's really sad to see what Microsoft has become and what computers in general have become. You golks make these programs and systems much harder then they need to be, you don't explain anything at all and it's just amazing that ANYONE would do that. I'm trying to better myself, learn a new programming language and the program doesn't even work! HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!?! I mean it couldn't even install it's own folder. So when some one sees this do you think it would be to much to ask to either fix the Visual Studio program so you don't have to do all this or maybe explain this patch in more then three cryptic sentences? Its like a lesson in insanity. It's really sad how you folks have made everything a nightmare to use. I don't even wanna use the Visual Studio niw but its on the hard drive and I can't get rid of it. I have exact same problem. I think, it is related to Windows Insider Preview. Are you running Win Insider Preview?

I have the same problem and yup I am registered to the insider program -Beta channel -, did u find a solution? ( I am still searching)
Yes. Luckily, I have a total of three PCs and only one has this issue. And my issue is still there.

Hi,
Unfortunately it did not fix our issue for AVD remote apps where from only 1 Backend Session host this issue was occurred while the user tried to SSMS Ver 19.1 remote app from AVD console. So, we tried the same command, then even tried by repairing the installed SSMS app in that server. But no luck yet.
Please suggest if you have any additional idea. Thanks.
I successfully solved this issue on my machine, to be honest, I still don't aware of the cause of this problem, however, what I did (maybe there will be a lot of unnecessary steps but I want to share this experience with u or/and the future version of me).
I almost tried everything that I found on the internet but nothing worked, after this hopeless try I get it back to work again.

This is also happening to me, and yes, also on Windows Insider Preview.
I have tried a bunch of things, uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting registry keys. Nothing works for me.
I even tried installing SSMS 17.9.1 which uses VS 2015 Isolated Shell and get the same error message from that on startup.
2015 Isolated Shell actually shows up in Add/Remove Programs unlike 2017 so I am able to try and repair it from there, but that did not work either. Looks like some sort of incompatibility with the Insider build.
I believe there is no stand-alone installation for vs 2017 isolated shell
The Visual Studio Shell is available for Visual Studio 2015, Visual Studio 2013, Visual Studio 2012, and Visual Studio 2010. It is not available for Visual Studio 2017 and later versions.
as I am interested in knowing the exact cause of this problem I believe, I can give it some time to support u in ur debugging process if u prefer to.
