Hi!

I have been having issues starting SSMS 18 as I keep getting this message:

213189-image.png
Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 Shell (Isolated) - Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application

I went to see a new version and found the Preview v19. I removed v18 and installed the preview. After successful Install (and later Repair) I get the same dialog box (once setup completes successfully). And after rebooting the PC, I'm not able to run as per the image above.

I was able to resolve this issue with the help of this post.

    1. Install ViVeTool.zip
    2. Run these commands (from elevated cmd prompt)
      vivetool /disable /name:SV2Navpane
      shutdown -r -t 0

After a reboot, Management Studio is running successfully... thanks!

I have exact same problem. I think, it is related to Windows Insider Preview. Are you running Win Insider Preview?

I successfully solved this issue on my machine, to be honest, I still don't aware of the cause of this problem, however, what I did (maybe there will be a lot of unnecessary steps but I want to share this experience with u or/and the future version of me).

    • deleted everything related to SQL Server and SQL server management studio, (control panel > programs > uninstall everything associated with SQL or SQL engine).
    • deleted visual studio
    • deleted all dotnet versions.
    • deleted all C++ 20** Redistributable
    • make sure that is no file in the Registery related to the SQL server.
    • reinstall SQL server management studio (just like fresh) and it works.

I almost tried everything that I found on the internet but nothing worked, after this hopeless try I get it back to work again.

This is also happening to me, and yes, also on Windows Insider Preview.

I have tried a bunch of things, uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting registry keys. Nothing works for me.

I even tried installing SSMS 17.9.1 which uses VS 2015 Isolated Shell and get the same error message from that on startup.

2015 Isolated Shell actually shows up in Add/Remove Programs unlike 2017 so I am able to try and repair it from there, but that did not work either. Looks like some sort of incompatibility with the Insider build.
