Hello guys,

I deployed a hyper-V virtual machine and installed Windows Server 2016 on it. Then I promoted it to a domain controller. I want to configure a second domain CTRL for redundancy. Thus I installed another Win 2016 VM and the corresponding role but I`m not able to promote it to a domain CTRL.

I attached a screenshot that show the error that I got. There is a ping between the VMs, the credentials and the domain name are correct? do you have any idea how to solve it?

A domain controller should always have a static configured ip address, also add the server's own static ip address and loopback (127.0.0.1) listed for DNS and no others such as router or public DNS
Control Panel\Network\Sharing Center then Change adapter settings\Properties

I'd check the domain controller and problem member both have the static ip address of DC listed for DNS and no others such as router or public DNS.

Hi, thank you for getting back to me. You are right, both servers use my router as a DNS server. How can I replace the the router's IP address?

Hi, the servers are connected to the router of my home network. They received the IPs automatically. This is what I did:

    1. run ipconfig /all on VM1 and copy the ip received by the DHCP server, the subnetmask mask and the default gateway (my router's IP)
    2. go to "Control Panel\Network\Sharing Center then Change adapter settings\Properties", choose "Use the following IP address."
3.fill in the fields using the above information (I used the the IP address of the VM1 for the DNS server)

I repeat the above steps on VM2. The only difference is that I used VM1`s IP address for the DNS server instead of its IP address. Then I crossed my fingers and run the wizard again. Unfortunately, the problem is still here.

A class C mask (255.255.255.0) should be fine on all members. I'd probably address them all on 192.168.16.xxx network assuming the router is 192.168.16.1
