IE mode randomly and intermittently dropping in Edge

Hello. We have been in IE mode since June 15 and seemingly at random and for no particular client, Edge suddenly forgets to launch IE mode or "konks out". The edge://compat/iediagnostic says the policy is loaded. The users have to close all Edge windows, reopen and wait the 65 seconds and IE mode seems to work again. The site list is stored on a share and is never modified. Also, sometimes the site launches a standalone IE window. Something is up. Does anybody have any ideas? Thank you so much.

Oh, I asked a couple of users, for when this happens again, to try to go to the diagnostics page and click Force Update to see if that knocks IE mode back into whack (instead of closing and the 65 seconds thing). One time, although I was having no issues, I noticed a red load error dot next to Force Update button, although the site list on the share was correctly indicated. The red dot went away right after I clicked Force Update. I don't know if that is related. Thank you so much for reading.

I just had the bizarre behavior again out of the blue just clicking bookmarks for IE mode sites. It launched IE in a standalone window. I went to edge://compat/iediagnostic and under "Internet Explorer mode diagnostics" it says "Failed (Internet Explorer mode setting isn't enabled in Edge)". It has a Retry button next to it. Further down it says Internet Explorer mode setting is Off....Group policy settings...Off.

Ok, trying Retry button and nothing is happening. I can't get it to reload the Policy. I'm going to try the last recourse to close Edge and do the 65 seconds thing. Yep, that restored Ie mode again. Something is definitely up with Edge dropping the group policy intermittently.

Do you mean the website will open in an IE window instead of Edge IE mode when navigating to the configured sites in Edge?

I tried to reproduce your issue but failed, I used local configuration file sites.xml and configured IE group policies. it works fine even I added the sites as bookmarks. Could you provide a screenshot of the page edge://compat/iediagnostic?

Hi. and thank you for reading. Yes, I think the IE window is because I still have the IE desktop application. I have also seen the sites launch in Edge but no IE mode. I think the users who have newer pcs (no longer with IE desktop) see the sites launch in Edge but no IE mode. I have seen that myself two or three times over the past couple of weeks.

It is so random and intermittent, it's close to impossible to reproduce. I have seen it crop up testing other things I've been doing with website and have seen the above. I blew it off until users reported it themselves. The only consistencies I am able to find are that 1) the policy has failed on the diagnostics page 2) the drop could occur mid-session (I sat there for two hours clicking IE mode bookmarks until I was able to repro a drop) 3) it happens for multiple users and the only resolution is close all Edge and relaunch with the 65 seconds wait.

Well, if this is the case, I recommend that you could send feedback to the relevant team on this issue, please press Shift+Alt+I in Microsoft Edge to edit the content of your problem and send it. Hope this issue will be resolved soon.
