Dear MS Q&A,

Seeking advice and information on what is the official List View Threshold limit for SharePoint Online Libraries in Modern experience?
Is it 5,000 or 20,000 and if possible would appreciate advice on the related Microsoft Article referencing it.

In additional, hoping to gain advice on related Microsoft Article stating that managing List View Threshold limit is not permitted in SharePoint Online tenant.

Sorry for that there is no official Microsoft article to describe managing list view threshold is not permitted for SharePoint Online.

Per my knowledge, we can’t change the list view threshold in the SharePoint Online. The number 5000 is controlled by Microsoft to ensure better performance in the SharePoint Online.

Appreciate the information.

With regards to the 5000 List View Threshold Limit, does it only strictly apply for Classic experience only but relaxed for Modern experience?
Is there any current upper limit to what Modern experience can support?

Yes, both modern experience and classic experience have 5000 list view threshold limit.

Thanks @Emily Du-MSFT ,

Was able to observe that certain views exceeding 5000 item count were still accessible via Modern experiences whereas it would normally be blocked via Classic experience, although there will be certain visual behaviours that do not render properly (e.g. Total settings, Group By default collapsed behaviours, etc...).

Views showing many items work best in the modern experience. To avoid errors you might see in the classic experience, use the modern experience.

When the number of items exceeds 5000, the probability of getting errors when doing various operations on the list will increase.
