What disk type is more appropriate on Azure to replace my on-prem file server? Stardand or Premium?

I am about to replace my on-prem file server but I am not sure which type of disk I should choose from on Azure like Standard HDD or Premium SSD. I know Premium is more appropriate for workloads needing low latency and high performance i/o but considering my file server has only docs, spreadsheets, etc so I reckon that Standard HDD disks will do the job.

You can choose Standard SSDs disk. I would recommend go for standard SSD in future it will be more useful and efficient .

Standard SSD disks are standard disks backed by solid-state media, optimized as cost effective storage for workloads that need consistent performance at lower IOPS levels.

Standard SSDs are designed to provide single-digit millisecond latencies and the IOPS and throughput up to the limits described in the preceding table 99% of the time. Actual IOPS and throughput may vary sometimes depending on the traffic patterns. Standard SSDs will provide more consistent performance than the HDD disks with the lower latency.

For standard SSDs, each I/O operation less than or equal to 256 KiB of throughput is considered a single I/O operation. I/O operations larger than 256 KiB of throughput are considered multiple I/Os of size 256 KiB. These transactions incur a billable cost.

What is the benefit of using Standard SSD disks instead of HDD?
Standard SSD disks deliver better latency, consistency, availability, and reliability compared to HDD disks. Application workloads run a lot more smoothly on Standard SSD because of that. Note, Premium SSD disks are the recommended solution for most IO-intensive production workloads.

Many thanks for your reply. I dont see this Standard SSD option when creating a Storage account on Azure. It just gives me 2 options, either Standard which is HDD I believe or Premium which is SSD. Where do I select Standard SSD?

Answering your new question and extending to @Sumarigo-MSFT answer, Yes you were right about the fact that while creating a storage account it will show only 2 options in the performance section (Standard and Premium). In order to go for Standard SSD, you have to go for the "Premium option" because Premium performance storage accounts use solid-state drives (SSDs) for low latency and high throughput Whereas Standard (general-purpose v2 account) option deliver the lowest per-gigabyte capacity prices for Azure Storage, as well as industry-competitive transaction prices. General-purpose v2 accounts support default account access tiers of hot or cool and blob level tiering between hot, cool, or archive.

Hi Sumitkumardas-1042,

thanks for your reply. I understand all that but i am more interested in what is the best or recommended disk in order to replace my on-prem file server? Like I said before it will be only docs, spreadsheets, nothing heavy like videos or databases. What I am looking at here is deploy file share storage account on Azure and then copy my local data over to the file share on Azure however I am not sure which option i should go with in the performance section (standard or premium) when creating the storage account. thanks

@Edson Reis Please choose **Standard (GPV2 account) ** that's the best option for your scenario and in redundancy options you choose GRS or LRS, for more information refer to this article
