Got Error "command line option syntax error. type command /? for help" during installation Visual C++ 2005

we are getting below error during installation of Visual C++ 2005 on windows 2019 server while running through chef recipe. Any solution on this error..?

Error: command line option syntax error. type command /? for help

Note: The solutions provided previously did not resolved the issue (Clean reboot etc)

Did the User Name or installation path include double-byte character set (DBCS) character?

Hi @anil_688 , welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. Did you just double-click to run and install Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package or use any command line to install it? I suggest you try to use this troubleshooter and see if this tool helps. Besides, since Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package is an old version of package, I'm not sure if it is still supported to be installed on Windows 2019 Server. If it is possible, I think you can try installing the latest package(s).

HI @Tianyu Sun-MSFT , Thanks for the warm welcome. I have tried to install using chef recipe and getting the error post that its not able to install Visual C++ 2005 package. When am trying to install manually its able to install not sure what is the issue while running with Chef...? I have tried with other latest packages (2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015) and am able to install with Chef recipe. I am not sure why am getting this popup error message for 2005 ..?
Please share your thoughts on this.

Hi @anil_688 , I think the Chef you mentioned is a third-party application/tool? And looks like it uses command line to install this package? If the command line do exist, I think you may need to check the command line option syntax, and the error should be related to the syntax.

Hi there,

If you have installed previous pre-release versions of Visual C++ 2005 or Visual Studio 2005, such as Beta 1, Beta 2 or Community Technical Preview (CTP) builds, then you must uninstall these versions via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before installing the final released version.

You can also run the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool and see if that sorts the issue

Hi @Limitless Technology , Thanks for the feedback. I have cross checked there is no any pre release versions available for 2005 package. I am using final version but its not able to install through Chef recipe.
Please share your thoughts in case if you have any other.
