Hi

I have managed to replicate a bug within Windows 11 that can be produced on any Workstation or laptop that is part of a domain

The issue - which took a couple of months to work out the pattern :

A group policy is in force to prompt a user to change their windows password every X days. upon changing the password, the workstation will carry on working well throughout the day. However if the workstation is removed from the network (unplugging the ethernet cable) and a restart takes place. All passwords for Edge, Chrome, Outlook, Adobe etc are gone

Fixed workstations (always on the ethernet cable) will not notice the issue. Laptops on the other hand will be impacted the next day (when the end user takes their laptop home). At first i believed that it was somehow related to the laptop joining another network (wireless, whilst at home). however the issue can be replicated by simply changing the password at any point within X days and restart the system with the network cable detached.

This is an horrible bug and have so far replicated on 10+ Windows 11 devices. the only fix is to re-populate the passwords

Replicated on Windows 11 upgrade from VL Windows 10 Pro to 11 Pro

Replicated on OEM Windows 11 Pro

Replicated on OEM Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 upgrade

I have tried deleting the user profile and re-creating. Checked that windows credential manager service is working (this should not affect other programs that have their own cache storage and do not require windows credential manager)

The key part to finding this issue is that 2 people had been affected on the same day. otherwise i would of never put this down to the password change enforcement

Any help will be appreciated

Steve

I've got the very same issue on my win 11 laptop and a couple of others win 11 in our company.
I can't believe Microsoft hasn't yet acknowledged and fixed this problem!

If it's a bug then use the system's Feedback App to report the same directly.

@TG-Steve This problem has been fixed. The issue is with the password change technique. The issue will arise if you utilise the user management window to change the password of a local account. You must change the password for the local account using the Windows 11 settings (Sign in Options).
