Windows Server 2012 Cannot Install Office 2016

Hi Everyone,

We had Office 2016 installed in our Windows Server 2012 before and had to remove it when it had some license error.

Now, it gives out 2 errors:

Error Code: 0-2031 (17004)
Error Code: 30201-44

We tried the following too:

Did an Online Repair.
Used Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office.
Deleted Microsoft credentials from the Credentials Manager.
Ran a Scan Disk
Restarted server and then tried installing Office 2016 after confirming it was not installed after confirming in the Programs & Features window for installed apps in this server.
Tried installing the 32-bit and 64-bit.

This server is also hosting our website, so formatting it to reinstall Windows is not really an option at this moment.

Any help is very much appreciated.

For better analyze this issue, I have following questions.

Which version of Office 2016 do you install?

Where did you get the installation files of Office 2016? Is it download from VLSC?
If possible, you can check and change the Office installation package.

Can you let us know how did you install Office 2016? Do you run command setup.exe /config XXX.xml or just run setup.exe program in installation package to install Office?
Please go to %temp% folder to find whether there is any log. By default, for volume licensed versions of Office 2016, the log is called SetupExe(XXX).log.

Is there any anti-virus software enabled on machine?
If so, it's best to temporarily disable it to do a check.

Thank you very much for your response.

I installed Office 2016 by logging into our Microsoft account and then navigating to where it says to download Office 2016 for the listed devices. It showed our Product Keys too, so I just clicked "Install" and downloaded the installer.

From there, I ran the newly downloaded "OfficeSetup.exe" file.

The server has no antivirus except for the built-in Windows Defender. I also tried turning off all firewall and Windows defender and still had the same error.

Sorry, didn't see a"SetupExe(xxx).log file; however, I ran another Office install and it generated another log file documenting the error message.

Please see the attached log file.

We greatly appreciate your assistance on this and you're very much appreciated.

Thanks for your response.
According to your descriptions, if your Office is not volume licensed version, then the Office 2016 does not use MSI installation technology and does not have SetupExe(xxx).log.
But you can find whether there is any <Machine Name>Date-Time.log files?
Besides, I do not find the attached log file.

Thank you very much.

Correct, looking at our Microsoft webpage, it listed several computers with their own unique product key. Sorry, I am not sure which key belongs to which computer; however, when I clicked on the install link, it let me download what I think is a generic Office installer and not an installer that has its product ID burned into it.

Sorry, please see the attached installerror.txt file.

Also attached the file that has the PC name - Date.txt.

Hi @Sonny B

I find your Office is Office Home & Business 2016 from the logs.

Then I want to confirm, which version of Windows Server 2012 do you have? You can go to the Properties of "Computer" to have a check.

Based on my tests, if I install this version on Windows Server 2012 Standard via running ODT with .xml file, I will get the same error as yours. It means that this version of Windows Server 2012 does not meet the Office Home & Business 2016 system requirement.

But if I run the same ODT and .xml file on Windows Server 2012 R2, this issue goes away.

Thank you very much.

To confirm, we are on Windows Server 2012 Standard and yes, we have the same error as you.

Is there an Office installer that is compatible with Windows Server 2012 Standard?

The strange thing is that this same installer worked before a few years ago.

A separate issue is that our Windows tried to install an update and failed, so it had to roll itself back to the previous state. Not sure if this is a factor; however, just reporting it.

If I run an older version of ODT to install one older version of Office 2016 (Version="16.0.13530.20316"), Office Home & Business 2016 can be installed successfully.
But I do not know from which version of ODT and which version of Office Home & Business 2016 that can't be used or installed on Windows Server 2012 Standard.
