attempting to install SMSS Release 18.5.1. Unabe to bring up SSMS because it is looking for MS Visual Studio 2017 shell (Isolated), according to SSMS installer the MSVS shell is being installed. The error message is as follows:
"cannot find one or more components - Please reinstall the application"
I uinstalled the Release version and attempted to install SSMS Release 16 and received the same message for MSVS shell 2015 (Isolated). I am also a Windows Insider running WIN 11 PRO Build 25158.1000.

I did see a post here in Docs Q&A one or two weeks ago, where someone claimed that a specific update to Window 11 Insiders broke SSMS. I don't run SSMS at all on Windows 11 (yet), so I cannot verify. But you could search backwards to see if you can find that post and which KB you should try uninstalling. It was a recent update, as I understood it. (Something about tabs in Windows Explorer as I recall.)
By the way, thr most recent version of SSMS is 18.12.
