Hi all,

I am writing a report by the word 2016. When I close and reopen the file, I found the previously inserted captions are not invalid. In this case, if I add new captions such as Fig. , it will be counted from Fig 1 rather than from the previous number of Fig. Could you tell me why it occurs and how to address it? Thank you.

    @Di Liu ,

    I agree with them, it's hard to troubleshoot this issue without your example document.

    I'd like to suggest you go to References > Insert Caption > check whether there is the previous label in the drop down list.

    If not, please back up the document first, then click New Label > Enter the new label as previous one > OK, then check this issue.

    Not without seeing the actual document or a lot more information.
    When you say that previously numbered captions are not invalid, I assume you mean they are invalid. What does invalid look like to you?

    As Charles wrote, this is rather difficult to troubleshoot from a distance, without seeing an example document.

    Generally, though, if you mean that you can't get the numbering to continue from previously inserted captions, they are probably using different caption labels.
