MECM standalone media set to expire with self signed certificate

When creating standalone media in MECM and applying the expiry during the creation process what does the stick use to know when to expire?

I've tried changing BIOS date and time which didn't impact functionality. If someone could point me to a resource or tell me how this works I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi,

When we create the stand-alone media, on the Security page, check the option "Select date range for this stand-alone media to be valid", we can set start and expiration dates on the media. This setting is disabled by default. The dates are compared to the system time on the computer before the stand-alone media runs. When the system time is earlier than the start time or later than the expiration time, the stand-alone media doesn't start.

There's not really a lot of information in the article linked about how it determines when to expire. For example is it using the time set in BIOS or something else?
