A seemingly simple thing, but unfortunately the relevant box is greyed out. Do I really need to re-create every alert I want to rename, just to introduce a new naming scheme for all our alerts?
I don't work with a lot of Azure Monitor rules but I do see the same in my lab. No obvious option to rename.
Not supported by today. You have to recreate the alert rules with the right names
How do you know? Is there a timeline for this "feature" :)
I work closely with Azure Monitor product groups, there is no ETA by today

OMG - please... we have 2023 and it's not possible to rename something like that - once more speechless...
Duplicate Feature is useless - it adds an "- Copy" to the existing name... :-x
Alert name is being used as resource id which is unique for all resources in Azure
Yes, and also as header for Email alerts. This doen't make it better... Always use hidden identifier, never something you show to people. Azure uses GUID's for everything else and this makes sense. Sorry - full fail.
I feel your pain and understand this point of view. But it is what it is per today.

I can't believe this is still a Thing in 2023. Who doesn't let display names be editable, seriously? Tell me you're using the display name as a foreign key without telling me you're using the display name as a foreign key.

There is a trick for that, just duplicate the rule and then put the correct new name in the duplicated rule, later remove the old one. E voila
