Outlook 10 doesn't send/recv

For a long while now I’ve had a problem when I click Send/Recv: it often displays a progress bar with the message “Synchronizing Inbox” (or another folder) and thrashes forever without completing the task. I eventually shut down email, then go to Task Manager and end the Microsoft Outlook task that is still running. Thereafter, when I bring up Outlook again it’s fine for a week or 2. I have about 2000 messages in my inbox, but it does this with folders that are much smaller as well.

For the past week, when I click Send/Recv (or Outlook initiates it automatically) the progress bar goes to about 90% but never finishes. I now have to go through the above process each time I want to send or receive an email.

I've never submitted a question to this forum before. I apologize if I'm not providing clear or enough information, and am happy to try to answer any questions you might have. Also, the instructions say I should use tags and these are the closest I could find. I hope they are not misleading. I appreciate your understanding and any help you can give.
Thanks!
Roy

    Hi @royyem ,

    Welcome to our forum!

    • What detailed version of outlook are you using?(File > Office Account > About Outlook) Please make sure the outlook version is up to date.
    • Is it an Exchange online account? If so, I suggest you to verify the synchronizing period. For this setting, you need to go Open Outlook > File > Account Settings > In the email tab, click Change > Turn on cached mode > Under Offline Settings, move the slider to the desired amount of time.

    Methods to fix this issue-

Method 1: Make sure the servers are online
Before you go ahead and make changes that can potentially affect the way your Outlook works, let’s eliminate causes that are beyond our reach. The first thing you should check is the state of the mail server.

If your mail server is currently offline, your email will be retained in the Outbox folder until the issue is sorted out. A quick way to check the state of your mail server is to look in the lower right-hand corner of the Outlook window. If it says “Connected” or “Connected to Microsoft Exchange”, the error is not related to the server status.

If it says “Working Offline”, you need to open the Send / Recieve tab and click on the Work Offline button to disable it. But keep in mind that you might need to open the email and send it again for it to send properly.

In the event that it displays “Disconnected”, make sure your internet connection is working properly. The quickest way to do this is to open your browser and surf the internet. If you weren’t able to load any web pages in the browser, it’s clear that you have an internet connectivity problem.

Method 2: Resend the email message
Before you get technical with the methods below, it’s worth trying to send the email again an see if it manages to leave the Outlook folder. If you open the email from the Outbox folder while it’s being sent, Outlook won’t remove it from that folder even if the email was successfully sent.

A quick way to check if the email was already sent is to open the email and try to re-send it manually. You can do this easily by accessing the outlook folder and clicking on the Send button again.

    Regards,

    Hi @royyem

What type of account are you using?

Have you tried sending on the web? Does the issue also exist on the web?

Besides, check if some third-party add-ins cause the problem, run outlook in safe mode:
Right-click the Start button, and click Run.
Type Outlook.exe /safe, and click OK.

If the issue continues, create a new profile and re-add your account from control panel:
    Control Panel> Mail > Show Profiles> Add
