Can I configure Azure Static Web Apps to allow shtml files for server side includes?
The "configure application" option is grayed out in the free tier where I am testing. Does that require the paid tier for static web apps?
If I add a mime type to be set for shtml in the config file, will static web apps process the include?
With the exception optional API routes, Azure Static Web Apps serves static content, so server side includes like you are looking for is not supported. Any processing must be done when the app is built (in the GitHub workflow).
Can you please share more information about what you are trying to solve with include files?
Thanks. I am trying to slim down html files to fit in the Azure static web apps limit of 500 MB per app. I have 3 static versions of a website, each with 8000 html files (811 MB for main site, 303 MB for legacy site, 105 MB for mobile site). I have an additional 230 MB of images (4000 files) that are called from each of the 3 website versions; I plan to put these image files in a storage account to access from each of the websites.
The problem was that my main site at 811 MB is too large for Azure Static Web Sites. The smaller sites (legacy and mobile) should each fit in their own static web app space. There is considerable boilerplate across pages, and I think using includes I can slim each page by maybe two thirds. If SSI is not an option, then I think I found a way to do this with web components instead. I've tried the site as an angular single page app, but this was not as responsive as static pages.

Server side includes SSI is almost a standard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Side_Includes
Apache and Ngnix do support SSI.
However, I understand it need some extra compute to process SSI in html file whereas Static Web apps service is designed and optimized for serving Static web pages.
But if Azure Front door can support Edge Side Includes which is a standard for w3c specification https://www.w3.org/TR/esi-lang/ that will help a lot of many use cases
