Issue while connecting to SMTP

Hi team,
One of our customers is getting below error. Can anyone help me on this, please

"error": "The email/username and password you have entered for your mail connection do not match.",
"serverError": "SMTP ERROR: Password command failed: 535 5.7.139 Authentication unsuccessful, basic authentication is disabled."

But they say the password they enter is correct and basic auth is enabled.
The password contains question/escalation marks.

    Maybe you disabled basic or SMTP authentication on user level?
    Is the Security defaults enabled on your tenant?
