Ctrl+A and F9 no longer working to update all fields, single table seems to be at fault.

I asked a question in the Microsoft Community and was advised to come here for assistance. Basically title, I've got a big complex word template I'm making using fields and bookmarks and xml mapping and it was all working like a charm until it suddenly didn't. The fields aren't locked, as I have followed advice to try to unlock them and can update any individual field manually with F9. I can also select all and update fields by running a simple macro:

Selection.WholeStory
Selection.Fields.Update

I'm making the document to share with friends and it needs to be user friendly, my plan was to instruct them all to press Ctrl+A and F9 to make it work. WHile It would be nice to ship it with a macro I'm not a developer and don't know how to "digitally sign stuff" and don't want my friends to compromise their security settings for something that a couple hotkeys could accomplish anyway.

After experimenting I determined that my problem comes when my selection includes a particular. If I place the cursor under this table and press Shift + Ctrl + End and then F9, it selects and updates every field. That table has been in the document from the beginning, it has no tables in it but is full of XML Mapped content controls that would be a pain to re-map if I have to delete the table. I don't recall making intentional changes to it that might have messed this up but it seems to be the root of the problem.

As stated, I'm not a programmer so there's a possibility that my issue is very simple and I'm just missing it or not aware of some feature I accidentally turned on. This is the link to my community post. Thank you to anybody who has any suggestions or advice.
