Windows Defender stopped before completing

The Event Viewer repeatedly Warns that the Windows Defender scan has been stopped before completion. There has been no user intervention to stop the scan. Why? What can be done?

    Reset Windows Defender.

    Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Windows Security > three dots > Advanced options > Reset.
