So I am rebuilding my fileserver that was running on Server 2016 and it had a three driver mirror. I am not sure how Storage Spaces Direct let me set that up but it did. Anyway after installing it I immediately understood my error and purchased another 8tb drive but it was too late there was no way to add just one drive in mirroring. So about a year ago I purchased four more drives and a large hard drive and have used that to backup my data until it was time to do a rebuild. The downside to the entire thing is each of the 8tb drives are 5400 RPM SATA drives that are SMR. I was not too concerned because this will mostly be a read only application. The goal is to setup a duel parody array with four SSD drives as a cache.
I go to rebuild the thing and the array today and see that now there are 12TB 7400 RPM SAS drives available for $110. I originally planned on doing duel parody but can only budget a max of four right now. The 8s will promptly go in my NVR which records constantly and that would be perfect for SMR since it is a constant write of a more or less predictable size that does not require a lot of bandwidth.
My question is simple if I drop four of these things in and do a simple single parody setup and then drop four more in later will that automatically setup a second column making it duel parody? Or am I locked in at single parody when I go with only four disks and expand?
Ultimately, I was looking at storage enclosures last night and would almost rather wait and invest in a new server, more energy efficient than a dell r510, with 2.5 inch drives and just get a JBOD enclosure for 3.5 drives. That way I can throw in more of those but keep the SSD and NVME tier on the server itself. Thoughts?
