What is the maximum number of characters that can be entered into a question?

I've spent DAYS trying to get questions posted into these forums, but I keep getting error messages that tell me I don't have access to an Ask.html page. Of course, I forget that the next time I try, so I waste more time typing in my question. I STRONGLY suspect the problem is the number of characters I can put into a question.

What is the maximum number of characters, please???
