What can I do if I don't have a BitLocker passkey?

I have a Dell All-In-One. The lights went out due to Tropical Storm Debbie and today when I turned it back on it is asking for a BitLocker passkey. I have logged into my account on a different computer which my Lenovo laptop but there are no BitLocker keys registered. I am afraid to click on reset because I do not want to loose things not saved on my USB.

    Hello  Delinda Evans,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community forum.

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with BitLocker. Here's a step-by-step guide on what you can do:

    1. Check Microsoft Account: Since you mentioned that you’ve already logged into your Microsoft account, double-check in the "Devices" section to make sure the key isn't there. Sometimes the key is stored under the device that was encrypted.
    2. Check Other Locations:
      • **Printed Copy**: You might have printed a copy of the BitLocker recovery key when it was first set up. Look through your physical documents.
      • **USB Drive**: Sometimes, the key is saved to a USB drive. Check any USB drives you have.
    3. Work or School Account: If your computer is managed by your workplace or school, they might have a copy of the BitLocker key. Contact your IT department for assistance.
    4. Local AD: If your computer is part of a domain, the recovery key might be stored in your Active Directory (AD). You would need to contact your IT department for this.
    5. Windows Recovery Environment:
      • Restart your Dell and enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2 (or the key specified by your computer manufacturer) during the boot process.
      • In the BIOS, ensure that the Secure Boot and TPM (Trusted Platform Module) are enabled.
      • Exit the BIOS setup and try booting into the Windows Recovery Environment by pressing F8 or Shift+F8 during startup (this can be tricky and might take a few tries).
      • In the recovery environment, look for options to troubleshoot and possibly cancel the BitLocker lock.
    6. Contact Dell Support: Since it’s a Dell All-In-One, Dell’s customer support might have additional methods or tools to help recover the BitLocker key or provide other options without data loss.

Avoid the "Reset" option if you are concerned about data loss, as resetting will likely result in the loss of all data on the drive.

If none of these options work, you might need to take your Dell All-In-One to a professional data recovery service, although this can be costly and might not always be successful.

I hope the information above is helpful.

If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Best Regards,

    Haijian Shan
