I have posted an updated version of the .NET Framework cleanup tool that now contains support for automatically cleaning up the .NET Framework 1.0, the .NET Framework 1.1, the .NET Framework 2.0, the .NET Framework 3.0 and the .NET Framework 3.5.

This tool automates the manual cleanup steps for the .NET Framework 2.0 that I posted a while ago. These steps have helped solve most of the known .NET Framework 2.0 beta uninstall issues that I know of. In addition, the tool can be useful to return your system to a known (relatively clean) state in case you run into any .NET Framework 2.0 installation failures so that you can try to install again.

The updated version of the cleanup tool contains options to clean up the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 separately and all versions simultaneously in a single step. The cleanup tool contains logic so that if it is run on an OS version that includes the .NET Framework as an OS component, it will not offer the option to clean it up. This means that running the cleanup tool on Windows XP Media Center Edition or Tablet PC Edition will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.0, running it on Windows Server 2003 will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 1.1 and running it on Windows Vista will not offer the option to clean up the .NET Framework 2.0 or the .NET Framework 3.0.

There are a couple of very important caveats that you should read before using this tool to cleanup .NET Framework bits on your machine :

This tool is designed as a last resort for cases where install, uninstall or repair did not succeed for unusual reasons. It is not intended as a substitute for the standard uninstall procedure. You should try to perform an uninstall from Add/Remove Programs before using this cleanup tool.
This cleanup tool will delete shared files and registry keys used by other versions of the .NET Framework. If you run the cleanup tool, you will need to perform a repair or reinstall for all other versions of the .NET Framework that are on your computer to get them to work correctly afterwards.

I have been using this tool for a while, and it has proven reliable, but there may still be bugs in it in certain scenarios. Please contact me if you run into any issues while using the cleanup tool or if you are still unable to install the .NET Framework (or any service packs or hotfixes) after running it.

The tool has a command line switch that allows it to be run in silent mode if needed. There is more information about how to run it in silent mode in the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide.

Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 2.0

The cleanup failed and I am still stuck. The failure log files are below, is there ANY other solution.

I could not uninstall or reinstall the dotNet framework 2.0

Hi sAji - The errors in the log you listed here indicate that a couple of services could not be stopped, but the rest of the cleanup appears to have worked fine. What is the exact error message you receive when attempting to uninstall or reinstall the .NET Framework 2.0?

Thanks for your tool. I've ysed it but i can't still install .NET 2.0.

I initially installed mine via SQL server 2005 std. I only wanted to check an install package and i made the mistake of removing .NET framework. Ever since i've been battling with the installer.

I get to the unregistering System.EnterpriseServices.dll then it starts to rollback.

Executing : C:winntMicorsoft.NETFramework2.050727
RegSvcs.exe" /bootstrapu

I just need to get my management studio up and running so i can work online.

Any help would bu truly appreciated.

Hi Best Practice - The error that you list is actually a rollback custom action, so that isn't what caused setup to fail. Can you please open up %temp%dd_netfx20msi*.txt and search for the string "return value 3" (without the quotes) and paste in the lines immediately above it? That should show the error that caused setup to rollback to begin with.

It is likely that you are running into an error while registering System.EnterpriseServices.dll. If so, I have a blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/17/600677.aspx that lists some possible solutions for that. If it turns out that this is the cause of the rollback on your system, can you please try those suggestions and see if they help?

(I was on vacation ;-) My problem seemed to be that the installer put Dr. Watson in "D:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedDW" for no apparent reason. My system drive is C: and the normal Program Files dir is there too. The D: drive letter was later reassigned to a CD-ROM drive. Thus, it couldn't uninstall the stuff on D:. I ended up having to search and replace in the registry. Kind of a pain.

BTW, is your uninstaller supposed to remove the Framework64 directory?

Hi Favorini - This Dr. Watson file issue is a bug that was found too late to fix in time for the .NET Framework 2.0. I'm sorry for the hassles that it caused you.

I need to add better 64-bit steps to the cleanup tool. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet on a 64-bit OS to figure out what steps need to be added. It is on my list to do in the near future.

I used the dotnetfxcleaner tool after reinstalling software after a crash. Framework 2.0 had errors and I used the tool before the manual option. It cleaned up ver2.0 and allowed full install of ver 2 and later version 3 which had also failed. Updates loaded both 2 and 3 after using this tool without problem. System HP pavilion using XPSP2

I can not install TurboTax 2007 Deluxe due to problems w/ NET 2.0 Never had problem installing previous versions of TurboTax on same computer. Dell 8250 w/ Win XP Home w/ service packs. Downloaded the tool. Ran it only to remove NET 2.0 & it said it successfully removed NET 2.0. But when I went to explorer the folder v2.050727 was still there. I tried to remove it & still got the msg "Cannot delete v2.0: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use." I tried to install TurboTax & got the msg "Error 25015. Failed to install assembly 'C: WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727Microsoft.VisualBasic/Vsn.dll' because of system error: Access is denied.' Any other suggestions?

I use WinXP (SP-2) home with IE 7. When I got to start thensearch and enter name of a file or folder I wish to find the program runs fine. But it failes to stop. Hi Telephonics - I'm not sure what would be causing the issue that you describe, but it doesn't sound related to the .NET Framework, which is the topic of this blog post. Windows Explorer is not a .NET Framework application. You may want to try to repair/re-install Windows XP SP2 on this system to see if that helps.

Hi Telephonics - For your other question - the .NET Framework versions 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0+ are designed to allow you to install them side-by-side. Many applications will run correctly on the most recent version of the .NET Framework that you have on your system, but some applications will require a specific version of the .NET Framework. If you have any applications installed that require a specific version of the .NET Framework, and you uninstall that specific version, you will encounter an error message when running the application. You do not necessarily need to uninstall any versions of the .NET Framework unless you are trying to save hard drive space or something like that. If you do decide to uninstall any, I would suggest leaving the .NET Framework 2.0 and higher. Then if you have any applications that require the older 1.0 or 1.1 .NET Framework, you can install them back later on if you encounter any error messages from any applications indicating they specifically need 1.0/1.1. One note here - the .NET Framework 3.0 requires 2.0, so you will not be able to uninstall 2.0 if you still have 3.0 on the system. Similarly, the .NET Framework 3.5 requires 2.0 SP1 and 3.0 SP1, so you won't be able to uninstall those if you have 3.5 on your system. Hopefully this helps.

Hello Aaron, I've tried uninstalling everything .NET on my pc, and I've tried using your tool, but I think my machine was already too messed up for the tool to help. I have .NET Framework 2.0 and Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (KB928365) installed - I can't uninstall them so that I can start over. Whenever I try I get this: "The following error occurred during setup: Patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." How can I fix this?

Hi Tulsazorro - Typically for that type of "patch package could not be opened" error message, I suggest the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/03/07/8108332.aspx (which includes running the cleanup tool). I haven't heard of any cases yet where the uninstall using the cleanup tool failed in this type of scenario. Could you give those steps a try and see if they help on your system?

Hi, and thanks for the tool. I have had problems related to 1.1 and could not uninstall it due to Windows Vista not authorizing uninstallation. However, now my problem is that I cannot reinstall 1.1 It begins the process, gets near the end, and then "rolls back," which I have never seen before. While I'm bugging you, whenever I try to install 3.5 (and I'm not really sure I need to or want to), it says it can't because I don't have 2.0. However, when I try to install 2.0, I'm told I already have it (even after using your tool). I thank you for assistance you can muster! -Pete

Hi Calipete - I'm sorry for the hassle that this issue is causing for you. I haven't ever heard of Vista not allowing the uninstall of the .NET Framework 1.1 before. How did you work around that? For the install error, can you use the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/03/29/help-me-help-you-if-you-have-setup-bugs.aspx to gather a verbose log from the failing installation? For the .NET Framework 3.5, can you list the exact error message you see when you try to run that? Also, can you gather logs from that failing install as well? Phew! I encountered serious problems after deciding to cancel a framework 3.5 SP1 Beta installation. Your tool saved the day, although I had to run it twice. If I had tried that first, instead of trying to repair/uninstall/reinstall/apply SP1 of Visual Studio 2005, then I would not have spent the whole day/evening ;-)

Thanks Aaron, you're a master. Your cleanup tool solved all my problems. I have now a clean .NET2 which I needed for my new DotNetNuke application. After running add/remove programs the normal way, I had to run your tool twice with reboot because of all the dirt on my computer. My Bitdefender application (program bdagent.exe) needed a repair after this, but that was not a problem. Thanks.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Version 5.1 SP2. I have been running .NET Framework 2.0. I tried to install the SP1 update from Microsoft and it hosed my system. I tried the msicuu2.exe, but it still wouldn't work. Then I tried your dotnetfx_cleanup_tool. I was able to reinstall .NET Framework 2.0 and the computer and all programs work great. Thank you. However, if I try to install the SP1 update, it won't work and a lot of programs (Adobe, mostly) won't work. As soon as I run your tool and reinstall .NET 2.0, everything is fine again. Why can't I install the SP1 update from Microsoft? Thanks.

Hi Jane2001 - I'm sorry for the hassle that this issue is causing for you. The .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 setup creates a set of log files that will hopefully help narrow this issue down further so we can try to figure out the cause. The list of logs for .NET 2.0 SP1 setup is located at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2008/04/30/8445569.aspx. Could you please gather the logs from this list that are on your system, zip them, upload them to a file server and then reply here and post a link to your upload location so I can take a look at your logs and see if I can figure out what is causing this?

I zipped all of the logs into a file that is 2.26MB. I don't have a server that I can upload them to. Could I email them to you or do you have another suggestion? Also, it was interesting. I tried to do this update to SP1 twice - once in June (using another method - not yours) and again in August (this time using your method). All of the log files were dated June. Do you think the reason that your method didn't work was because I didn't erase these files before I started? Thanks.

Hi Jane2001 - There are a lot of free file servers available (for example, you get a free gigabyte of storage at http://skydrive.live.com). If you cannot use one of those for some reason, please contact me at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/contact.aspx instead. Some of the setup logs will append if a file with the same name already exists, and some will be created with unique names each time you run setup. The safest way to make sure you have updated logs is to move/rename/delete all of the existing logs, then re-run setup and let it fail once more, then gather the logs that it creates.

Hi Jane2001 - The .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 contains some security fixes, and there is also a .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 package available too that contains additional fixes. You'd be missing out on those fixes if you don't install it. Can you post the log files you mentioned previously so I can take a look and see why the SP is failing to install in your scenario?

Hi Frediano - I'm sorry, but I don't have much expertise troubleshooting this type of issue where a crash occurs when using VS after a successful install - my expertise is related to troubleshooting setup failures. I'd suggest posting this question on one of the Visual Studio forums at http://forums.microsoft.com and hopefully someone there can suggest some workarounds for you to try for this. I'm sorry I'm not able to be more helpful in this scenario.

I am just curious why there are so many problems with the .NET (every version) installs. It seems that every time a new patch comes out I have to rip .NET out and reinstall it, because the install frequently fails.

Hi JohnDiego - I'm not sure how to answer this. There are definitely issues on some systems related to the .NET Framework installation process, but that is definitely not the norm and the vast majority of users experience no problems with installing any version of the .NET Framework or any hotfixes. What kind of errors do you see when attempting to install new .NET Framework hotfixes that have led you to remove it and re-install it? Maybe we can figure out the root cause of the issue so that you won't have to resort to these steps in the future.

Good day Aaron, Just so there is no misconception about my knowledge of this subject. Zero would be an appropriate description. My problems with .Net 2.0 started with getting my Kodak 5100 printer to work! It uses .Net 2.0. This is when I discovered that despite having the following versions of .Net framework installed: version 1.0.3705 version 1.1.4322 version 2.0.50727 version 3.0 version 3.5 It will not work,stating that I do not have the proper .Net Framework 2.0 installed, even though I apparently do. For years I have downloaded all updates for Windows and honestly, have never had a problem with any of them,until now. I hope you are the many other readers/viewers can assist me with advice on how to proceed. Regards James

Good day Aaron, I posted a reply previously,I must have did it on another page. Anyway, I followed all the steps you gave me and in the order you said. I reinstalled .Net Framework 2.0 successfully. I also reinstalled my Kodak software and it works exactly as it should. Hooray. I also forwarded a message to the Kodak support person so they would know what to do. Virtually all the people I corresponded with said that they also encountered problems like I had and were proceeding to investigate the course of action I took Many thanks Aaron Regards James

I spent 3 days on the phone with Intuit and Autodesk because QuickBooks and AutoCAD would not open after foolishly allowing MS to download Framework 2.0 SP1. Your tool solved all problems in about a minute. You are truly a great person!!

Hello Aaron, First remember I am not a programmer. Indeed, I still do not know why my software that uses .NET 2.0 needs to, Kodak could not or would not tell me. Only, that it is crucial to it. My user only logic recognized that installing one software disabled another, conclusion, it must have interferred in some way. Only my Kodak AiO software fails. Second, software I install does not tell me it needs to use .NET Framework 2.0 to run. All I can do is remove them from my computer and hope for the best. So far the results are not good. Perhaps I should reinstall my Kodak software and see what happens? Regards James

Hi Jamest1945 - From the descriptions you've posted, it sounds like the issue is that something with the Kodak software doesn't work correctly when other products such as iTunes or your DVD burning software are installed. I'm not sure if or how this type of issue relates to the .NET Framework 2.0 at all, and that is what I'm trying to understand better with the questions I've been asking. If you have uninstalled the DVD burning software and iTunes and your Kodak application still doesn't work, what type of error do you see when this happens? It might help to try to repair/re-install the Kodak software, but without more details about what error messages you've been encountering, I can't say for sure whether that will end up helping or not.

I've been toiling with .NET Framework 3.0 installation issues for quite some time now. I couldn't install the latest 3.5 SP1 update which was released due to issues with the 3.0 installation. Repair or installs wouldn't work, but this cleanup tool did the trick. Months of headaches cleaned up by this tool. Thanks a bunch, Aaron.

Hi Stakeout - The only way I know of to get rid of updates like this is to boot into safe mode and uninstall them from there. It sounds like you're not even able to get into safe mode though. I'm not sure what else to suggest if that doesn't help. You may want to post a question on a Windows XP newgroup to see if anyone there can help suggest any other options to help you avoid needing to re-install your OS.

Hahaha thanks so much mate. I have spent several hours this morning trying to remove a corrupted install of .NET 2.0 on my win2003 x64 server. Nothing would work, I had gone through all these Microsoft articles and other sites trying manual removal methods, registry key removals, file renames/deletions and still had the problem. Hello Aaron, recently I ran into an issue with not being able to run certain mmc's, specifically Event Viewer. It fails with "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation." and FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510}. Googling this error leads to posts pointing to .Net 2. I'm running VistaB OEM on a Lenovo X61 tablet. Other than the mmc problem, antivirus is now broken as well as probably other apps. I tried removing and reinstalling .Net 3.51 SP1 and replacing machine.config with the original version (copied it over from machine.config.default). I downloaded your verification tool and it reported that .Net 2 SP2 and .Net 3 SP1 installations have errors. I could not however find an occurrence in any of the log files of the key that throws the exception (above), making me wonder if this is truly just a .Net error. Short of repair/reinstall of the OS (I read your other posts), is there anything else I can try to fix this. I can send you the log files (I could not find what caused them to fail by looking in the logs). Thanks in advance for your help.

first thanks for this awesome tool, it saved already a few hundred mb on my hdd! And since I use exactly 0 .net apps everything .net can go. Ok, now a question, I still have the folders: c:WINDOWSassembly (380mb) c:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NET (140mb) they both seem very .net related, shouldn't the be cleaned? For no .net left it still using a lot of space. Ideas?

Hi Alleskacke - If you do not have any versions of the .NET Framework installed or any applications that use the .NET Framework, then you can remove the %windir%assembly and %windir%Microsoft.NET directories on your system. The cleanup tool does not remove these directories because some other applications (and not just the .NET Framework itself) use those directories. However, if no version of the .NET Framework is installed, then nothing will be able to run correctly from those directories, so you can manually remove them.

Aaron, Many thanks for this .net cleanup tool! My brand-new EEE PC 1005HA used to blue screen and then immediately reboot. I tracked this down to mscorsvw.exe activating when the PC was idle. When I manually ran mscorsvw with "ngen.exe executequeueditems" it would also blue screen and reboot. I noticed that my other PCs don't have mscorsvw in their task manager list, but the 1005HA does. Then I was fortunate to find your article about how to repair .net and your awesome clean-up tool. After running the clean-up tool, my problem PC no longer has mscorsvw in Task Mgr AND best of all, it no longer blue screens & reboots. Kudos to you and Thank you. Donn Lee

I noticed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2009/09/28/9900528.aspx that if you are re-installing the entire dot-net series you recommend installing newest to oldest. The following is lifted from the other blog: If you plan to install all versions of the .NET Framework on a computer, you can minimize the number of reboot requests that you might get by doing the following: If possible, close any .NET Framework applications and stop any .NET Framework services that are running on the computer before running any .NET Framework setup. Create an administrative install point for the .NET Framework 1.1 + the latest service packs and updates if desired. Create an administrative install point for the .NET Framework 1.0 + the latest service packs and updates if desired. Install the .NET Framework 4 if desired. Install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (which will install the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 behind the scenes). Install the .NET Framework 1.1 + the latest SP from the install point created in step 2. Install the .NET Framework 1.0 + the latest SP from the install point created in step 3. end quote This is something I wish Iwould have run across earlier. It addressed a problem I had installing 3.0 by automatically installing it as a subcomponent of 3.5 SP 1. It would be nice if such tidbits were included in the download/update site descriptions of downloads.

I'm not sure why access would be denied like that for this product code though. Can you try to use the steps listed at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/30/487096.aspx to manually remove the product code {3125894F-D735-4C52-9765-79B9A7A0EE5E} and see if that works? It looks like the rest of the .NET Framework cleanup worked fine though, so I'd also suggest trying to install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on your system (it will also install the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 for you behind the scenes). You can install it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7. If 3.5 SP1 also fails, can you please use the tool described at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/11/21/6458047.aspx to gather your setup log files, then post them to a file server (such as http://skydrive.live.com) and reply here with a link so I can download them and take a quick look to see if I can figure anything else out?

Hi Helg - So far, I haven't added support for the language packs because I haven't run into any scenarios where the language packs got into a state where they required manual removal. Are you seeing problems where the normal uninstall of the language packs does not work on your system? If so, can you please provide more details about what kind of error(s) you are seeing?

Hi Lupus - I'm sorry for the hassles that this issue is causing for you. I'm not sure why the .NET Framework 3.5 would hang during installation like you describe. I'd suggest trying to install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 if you haven't yet - you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7. If it also hangs, can you please leave it running and use the tool described at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/11/21/6458047.aspx to gather your setup log files, upload them to a file server, and post a link to the logs here so I can see what exact step in setup is running at the time that it hangs?

Hey, is this a joke? I went to the .NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide site and clicked on the .zip link to download the tool, and all the browser does is sit there forever slowly moving the progress bar forward. Does the tool really exist?

Hello: I am a novice at this, but can't seem to get the 2 Updates below installed (always get fail). Customer Support had me run the cleanup tool twice, but nothing. Two questions:

Hello, I follow the steps

Download Cleanup
Download NET 1.1, 1.1 SP y 3.5 Run the cleanup and fine, then install the 3.5, 1.1 and 1.1 SP (this secuence because a microsoft support page says it). But the Windows Update offer again the updates for 1.1 SP and 3.5. Try installing 1.1 SP alone and fails, code 643. Try installing 3.5 alone and success for this, but, windows update offers me the 1.1 SP, then I try to install it and code 643. What I need to do, ignore it (because the 3.5 installed fine, or try to fix it to avoid windows update continues offering me that?

Hi Juse - In most cases, installing the .NET Framework 3.5 first will solve this type of error installing the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1. However, there are still some cases where the 1.1 SP1 install can still fail. There are some cases I've seen where the self-extracting package for 1.1 SP1 fails. In order to see if that is the case on your computer, can you please try to install 1.1 SP1 from the file at cid-27e6a35d1a492af7.office.live.com/.../netfx11sp1.msp instead of by using Windows Update and see if that helps?

I have spent all day trying to fix a Framework.net 3.5 KB982526 that refuses to install on Win7 x64. MS Framework.net did not show up in add remove so I used the cleanup tool to apparently remove Framework versions yet the update is still showing up even after reboot. As well dotnetfc35.exe refuses to install. At my wits end.

Hi Rayquest - I'm not sure why you're seeing this type of error. I'd suggest trying to use the steps listed at blogs.msdn.com/.../8108332.aspx to remove and then re-install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (which will also install the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2 behind the scenes).

Used the tool this am, and it worked! Thanks immensely. Based on my PC installed history, Microsoft should not have offered my 3.5 Family Package for dot net support. The MS programmers are out to lunch on the MS Update site. I am fed up with the mistakes these people are making!!

Hi HohaAndrey - For this type of access denied error, I'd suggest trying the tool and the steps described at blogs.msdn.com/.../solving-setup-errors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx to see if they help fix your file/folder/registry permissions. For a Windows Installer setup, you will need to make sure that the local system account and the Administrators group have full control over the registry locations that need to be updated by the setup program.

Hi. I tried to remove the framework software in the ordinary course without success. I may have made a mistake in trying to remove 1.0 prior to 4.0, the most recent version installed on my machine. In any event, I ran the program you point to, but now note that it appears to address only up to 3.5. All versions have vanished from the list of software in the add/remove macro, but folders and file remain under the Windows folder of my c-drive. At the same time there is a long list of files in the primary sub-directorty indicating uninstallation of some form or other. I've also downloaded all the files needed to reinstall starting from 1.0 upwards, but am unable to do so. Cannot recall the error message but I am not being allowed to proceed. Would very much appreciate your input / advice. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Abtinnyc - What I normally suggest in this type of scenario is to use the cleanup tool and the steps listed at blogs.msdn.com/.../8108332.aspx to fully remove all versions of the .NET Framework from your computer, then re-install them in the order listed at blogs.msdn.com/.../10108400.aspx. Hopefully this will help in your scenario too.

I'm going to install a standalone version of FW 3.5. Maybe it's a good idea ? The latest version you mean, FW 4 ? Installing FW 4 in my case without beeing installed previously 3.5 ?
SFC stopped at 99% with an error with 'Windows resource protection'
I checked all in my registry, all is OK ! 4.Only checked was XPS Viewer, Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation and non-HTTP are not checked. Do I need to check all boxes ?

Worked fine for me! I was stuck with Win 7 "trying to repair" a missing .NET FW 4. With nothing visible to uninstall and a new FW 4 faileing to install, I used the cleanup tool and then successfully installed FW 4. Thanks a million!

Hi Ramaflore - I mean the latest Windows service pack, not the latest .NET Framework service pack. I don't think it will help to install the .NET Framework 3.5 - you are currently getting an error when trying to install the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and I don't expect the behavior to be any different for the .NET Framework 3.5. It might help to install the .NET Framework 4, so I'd suggest trying to install that if you haven't yet. If you are getting a Windows Resource Protection error when running SFC, it likely means you didn't run it from an elevated cmd prompt. Please make sure to follow the instructions in the repair blog post exactly as they are written. When you use the Windows Features control panel to try to install the .NET Framework 3.0, you only need to check the parent item named Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. You don't need to worry about any of the items underneath it like XPS Viewer or Windows Communication Foundation HTTP or non-HTTP Activation.

Hi Aron, had a lot of trouble repairing a very mal disconfigured WinXPstarter (english + spanish) without any Original CDs. Owner: why should I keep all the useless CDs? ... :( Anyhow I managed to revieve the system, but when WinUpdate tried to 'improve' FW2...FW3, it aborts with MSI returend error code 1603... I tried hundreds of tips from different Forums, even MS... nothing helped. Then I stumbled over your log mentioning the .NET Framework cleanup tool. This worked perfekt for me. THX a lot! Hi Edd Salter - I'm really sorry to hear about this problem. The .NET Framework and the .NET Framework cleanup tool don't make any changes to the computer that have anything to do with the partition table, so I'm not sure why you are seeing this behavior now. I'd suggest trying to boot into safe mode and reverting to the last known good configuration for your computer if possible. I'm not sure if the safe mode menu option appears before or after this message though, so I'm not positive that is an option. If that isn't an option, you may need to boot in with a bootable CD and try to run chkdsk /R to see if it can find and fix any problems with your hard drive. You might also need to repair/re-install Windows if nothing else works.

Hi Chris McKay - I don't think setup is trying to install to your G drive. I think it is just trying to unpack temporary files used during setup to the G drive because it is the drive with the largest amount of free space. The 0xbc9 error doesn't indicate much other than that setup failed - it isn't too helpful for trying to figure out the root cause of the failure. i have tried to upload to skyline but when i click on vslogs.cab it states that items do not match my search, nothing shows up when i click on the folder. i have been able to access the folder through the computer and there are 17 items in the folder, looks to be 25mbs or more. i found that i can copy the notepad files to the desktop. the rest seem to be ie docs. i imagine i could load the notepad docs if that is acceptable. but do not know which ones you would require. fyi, after i posted above request, microsoft updater reloaded all of .net. still have same problems btw, the resolution of these issues are not work critical but i am interested in resolving them, if possible thanks for you assistance

Hi Lou - This is the error I see in your log file: Error 1923. Service '@C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v4.0.30319WPFWPFFontCache_v0400.exe,-100' (WPFFontCache_v0400) could not be installed. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to install system services. There might be an old version of that service stuck on your computer that is preventing this installation from working correctly. I'd suggest using the tool and the steps listed at blogs.msdn.com/.../8108332.aspx to fully remove the .NET Framework 4 from your computer and then try to re-install it from www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx.

i have acquired full admin rights however, when i log in as admin and windows opens i find that internet explorer does not work and i cannot access the internet to continue with the process. is this a problem or can i work from the owner position?

Hi Lou - What is the exact error message that you saw that referred to 3.5? If you are trying to install the .NET Framework 4, it should not have any dependency on 3.5. I'm also not sure what you mean about downloads being on the admin side - can you please clarify what you mean by that?

the computer has 2 sides now, on the owner side i can see all the notespads and such that i have saved with info, i can go to the download area and see everything i have downloaded, documents, programs, etc. it is the side i have used since we got the computer, but i cannot do any of the administrator issues on that side. to do the admin i have to log off as owner and then log in as the admin, the admin side is lean, there are only shortcuts on that side, i see none of the notepads that i have saved and when i go to downloads there is nothing in the folder, same with documents, pictures, etc. and when i go to the computer to find files and folders, it is not the same info as the owners side. it is not an error message, it is a warning sign that says microsoft.net framework 3.5 is required to run catalyst control center. please download and install the software from microsoft's website.

Hi Lou - It sounds like you have 2 user accounts and you're switching back and forth between which account you log in with. Is that accurate? If so, a lot of the settings like desktop shortcuts, etc are specific to each user. What I'd suggest doing is copying your downloaded files to a folder that is shared by all users - for example, you could make a folder named c:downloads or something like that. That way you'd be able to access it with both accounts. Regardless of that issue, it still sounds like you're having the same .NET Framework 4 install problem as you had before. It is possible that there is an older version of that service stuck installed on your computer that is blocking you from installing the .NET Framework 4. You have to go back and re-run the log collection tool to make it create a new vslogs.cab in your %temp% directory. Hi Lou - I looked at your most recent vslogs.cab, and they show successful installations of the .NET Framework. Because of that, I'm not sure that the issues you are seeing with CCC, Media Player, Media Center, etc are related to the .NET Framework. Since you are still having issues with so many different programs, it might be best to try to pursue a warranty repair/replacement with your computer manufacturer at this point. I'm very sorry that I haven't been able to be more helpful in this scenario.

I have a windows 2003 terminal server that I want to install a program on that our developers wrote that requires .net frame work 3.5. I would not install so I tried your tool. It got rid of all versions of framework as you said it would but now when i start the 3.5 setup it simply gets partially through and says it is reverting back. It never actually installs. I am able to install 2.0 and 4.0 and other version but not 3.5 that I need.

trying to install VETPRO on Win7 PC and users are not able to bring down the scan documents, any help.

Hey, I'm having issues removing .net from a VM. The ultimate problem is that .net 3.5 won't install properly, and windows won't allow an update until .net 3.5 is installed. (Windows XP). When I run the cleaner, it hangs at this point: [04/14/14,12:47:26] Deleting registry key 'SoftwareMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727' The timer will actually update, so it's obvious the cleaner is runnning, but it just continues at that point and does not proceed. At one time, I let it run for 1~2 hours, and it still did not move past that point. Thanks, Sam

Hi Sam - The cleanup tool has a problem where it can hang if it doesn't have proper permissions to delete one of the registry keys that it is trying to delete behind the scenes. I typically recommend looking in the log file to see the exact registry key that it is getting stuck on, manually deleting that registry key using regedit.exe, then re-running the cleanup tool. Please let me know if those steps don't resolve this problem for you.

  To fully uninstall the .NET Framework 4.6.1, you should use the entry in the Programs and Features control panel to remove it, then use the instructions in the Additional Information section of the .NET Framework 4.6.1 download page to remove the appropriate OS update package for the version of Windows that is on your PC.Note - if you're running the Windows 10 November 2015 Update (version 10.0.10586), then the .NET Framework 4.6.1 is installed as a part of the OS and there is not a way to remove it.
