Video: Application Lifecycle Management with Visual Studio 2013

Yesterday at TechEd North America we announced that Visual Studio 2013 and Team Foundation Server 2013 will be shipping later this year. A preview will be available on June 26, and that preview will have a “go live” license so that you can use it in production if you’d like.

Brian Harry posted a nice overview of the new ALM capabilities we announced yesterday.

Brian and I also delivered a foundational session at TechEd which goes deeper into these capabilities. We spent most of our time in demos so that you can get a real sense for what will be shipping in the preview. I hope you enjoy it.

    Brian have you released an all up VM with TFS 2013 preview and hands on labs? Anything new in the lab management / tfs project server integration?

    @Scott, no not yet. It's something I'm working on but it will take us a few weeks to get this ready. The first VM of any new release is always the most work. http://aka.ms/almvms is the one-stop-shopping link for all of my VM's and will be updated when future VM's are published. Re: your second question, no those scenarios are unchanged since 2012.

    Bummer to hear the VM isn't available yet...can you give us a date your looking to ship it by? Also, do you know if there's a TFS Power Tools version that works with the 2013 preview? I can't seem to find anything. Bummer to hear that 2013 is turning into such a small release IMHO. Without significant updates to core TFS features, specifically lab management and work items we'll probably skip 2013 and wait to catch the next wave. Still interesting in learning more about the new release...via your all-in-one VM. Any chance you'll be able to deploy the VM in Azure and host the labs online?

    @Scott, I'm hoping to ship it by the end of July. Please note that's a goal, not a promise. <g> We're making good progress but there's still a lot of work to do and several vacations/holidays impacting our schedule right now. I talked to the team who ships the power tools and they said that the TFS 2012 power tools should work with TFS 2013 but they haven't done any testing with this combination. An official TFS 2013 power tools release is expected with the TFS 2013 RC later this year. I'm sorry that you don't find TFS 2013 to be a compelling release for your organization. I would be interested in hearing about what features you're interested in us delivering. But generally speaking with the more rapid release cadence we don't expect every customer will pick up every release. You should evaluate each release on its merits to determine if it's worth the upgrade investment. For our part, we're committed to providing a great compatibility and migration story to make upgrading and mixed-version-environments as painless as possible. Two examples of what we have done here are the project/solution compatibility for different versions of Visual Studio clients, and the compatibility we maintain for different versions of VS connecting to different versions of TFS.

    By the way: Why isn't it possible to integrate the power tools in the new TFS release?

    @Thorston, in theory it would be possible but it would increase our engineering and support costs. Power tools are built and shipped in such a way that it allows us to be more agile with the delivery and respond more rapidly to customer feedback. From time to time pieces of the power tools functionality get baked into the main product.

    Brian, when is the TFS 2013 RC shipping, by the end of July? We just installed 2013 Preview and we are looking for the updated version of the TFS power tools for 2013.

    John R., That's right - VS 2013 doesn't support that version of MVC. We are working on a 2013 VM. We expect to publish it next week. This VM won't have Tailspin Toys, it will have Fabrikam Fiber. We'll update Tailspin eventually but not for next week.

    Very cool to hear Brian about the new release of the VM. Any chance you'll have the DevOps, Project Server, and Lab Management VMs updated as well with 2013 labs? I've been playing around with the new build scripting techniques in 2013 and I'm hoping to get my hands around better DevOps. Thx for all your hard work!

    Hi John, No, I don't have any immediate plans to update those other VM's. There haven't been any major changes to these scenarios in 2013. We'll have some smaller stuff coming out around DevOps in the 2013 timeframe but it's not ready in the Preview just yet.
