Our new Visual Studio 2005 Book

You may have heard that we have a new book out for Visual Studio 2005. The unfortunate bit of news is that it is only available if you buy the boxed version of Visual Studio, meaning that if you subscribe to MSDN, there will be no way for you to get a copy.

We are trying to convince MSPress to put out a version of the book on store shelves. If you wish to get a copy even if you are a MSDN subscriber, you can add a comment to this posting. With enough votes, I will then send this URL to the appropriate people in MSPress to show that there is interest.

 

[EDIT] One note about this: it is not possible to just send a copy of the book, but rather this is about making the book available for purchase at bookstores.

  Absolutely this ought to be published. The 2003 version was critical for learning how to extend the IDE. I've already run into all sorts of differences with 2005, and would certainly find an update to this book extremely useful. If it's anything like the 2003 version, I'd buy it and recommend it to anyone attempting to automate or extend the VS 2005 environment.

  Sorry, but I don't really care because if you subscribe to MSDN subscription, you should be more than mid level programmer, which means you may not need the kind of information you get from the book.

  I found the previous book for VS2003 very informative and it saved me many hours of pointless searching for information. I am a very competent developer and consequently my time is precious......LET ME BUY THE BOOK!

  Yes, please make this book available! There seem to be lots of changes to things like custom project templates, and the MSDN docs are not enough, people really need getting-started type help also.

  Whatever are the (economic?) reasons behind such an unfortunate decision, they should be revisited.
  
  If the book doesn't find its way to bookstores, this will be an exceptional case where Microsoft acts against its own best principles (doing everything to provide developers with quality books and documentation in general).

  So I took the bait, registered my licensed copy of VS (I'm a universal subscription holder), only to find that the book is NOT available on the vs 2005 registration benifits portal. Not a very good way to encourage people to register, if you ask me :-)

  I'm opposed to having to purchase an item Microsoft has considered important enough to ship with their boxed product. I think this book should be provided to MSDN subscribers at least as a .pdf subscriber download if a physical copy is not provided in the MSDN updates sent out to subscribers.

  I need this book. I couldn't find any samples in vs 2005 of how to write addins, I had to use the wizard which leaves a thing or two to wish for. I couldn't find any info on how to use the new tool window 'shim' which should prevent using a com-wrapper as in vs2003.

  Having just started to look into VS extensibility the 2003 version of the book has offered a lot of useful knowledge, tips and insights that it would have taken a long time to extract from the documentation. Not having a publically available edition for 2005 would be disappointing, especially considering the changes in 2005 such as the Class Designer, and all those around Team Suite. It sure would be a useful title to own a copy of.

  Just registered my copy as Team Edition for Software Developer and received an email from microsoft mentioned that the book was available to download. So I went ahead to download it. Unfortunately, it was another book with similar title, "working with microsoft visual studio 2005 TEAM SYSTEM", not the one by Craig as all of us here expected "working with microsoft visual studio 2005".

  I don't see much content on VSPackages in the "Mastering Web Development with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005" or "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" books, Is there anywhere else.
  
  By the way I downloaded the softcopy of "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" from msdn, it isn't much use.
  I registered my VS 2005 and received and email with a link to the download site for the "Working with Microsoft Visual Studio® 2005" book (use IE only as Mozilla doesnt seem to work).
