Go Seahawks!

The information published in this post is now out-of-date.

—IEBlog Editor, 22 August 2012

Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks on their awesome win yesterday and their first NFC championship! (The Seahawks are our local American football team.) We’re thrilled that the Seahawks are finally going to Super Bowl and can’t wait for the big game in two weeks.

    aack... not about football :>) ... Questions though: will IE7 embed support for Jscript.NET (client side)? Will .NET 2.0 be installed by IE7 and/or Vista?

    1> No IE7 does not embed support for .NET languages, although you can of course use Winforms integration to run Winforms code in the browser (this was possible in IE6 too).

    2> No IE7 does not install .NET 2.0, but I believe Windows Vista does.

    Hurray for football. After you're done vegging watching the games though, would you mind adding some features to IE? At least tabbed browsing. I mean, all the browsers out there have tabs now. Even AOL. And I mean, come on, that's AOL. And how about some protection from all those ad/spyware bars that can get installed automatically? That'd be good too. Oh, and a built in popup blocker...

    Ehm... please read the previous post also ;-)
    Yes it is in :P!

    IE is far from my favourite browser (due to CSS problems), but if you can't relax (football) you can't work! Enjoy the Football! And Enjoy developing IE as much as I enjoy making websites!

    I watch/like very much "football" as we Europeans know it. So I won't say Go Seahawks! but I'd very much like to say:

    Samo Botev Plovdiv!

    Which means Only Botev Plovdiv! in Bulgarian. :)

    Hi guys,

    While I am normally a big fan of these blogs, I have to agree with a few of the latest comments, that a post of this nature really is not appropriate here.
    I hate to sound a little mean with all of this, but one of the main rules that you ask induviduals to stick to when posting is that they 'stay on topic'. My point there is that surely you guys should be held to that rule when it comes to the the stuff you put up.
    As Chad has also mentioned, updates like these project a kind of unprofessional image to the reader.
    Anyways, my overarching point (much like many of the other posters before me), is that if people wanted to read about football news (or anything sports related), then they'd go to a dedicated sports website or blog. As it stands, people who are reading this blog are interested in IE and in getting the latest news on IE 7, so they kinda expect posts on along those lines.......
  • Anonymous
    January 01, 2003
    Some of these responses are hilarious, but come on guys. What did you expect? People come here for IE7 not football.

    My question is, why was this link removed from the frontpage of Mix06?

    "Adam, Innocent Bystander: We've heard the feedback about standards-based web development, and IE7 addresses many of the biggest issues. You will be able to try IE7 before MIX, and we'll make a special build available at MIX. We'll also have open discussion where you can provide this kind of feedback to the IE team in person. Finally, I want to be clear that the conference is about a lot more than the web browser. RSS, media, gadgets, etc. all play a big part."

    http://blog.mix06.com/blog/archive/2005/12/16/12.aspx#comments

    Seems to be a simple direct answer that we are not getting here. Instead of Q1 which is a vague as you can be. This clearly states that IE7 will be out before Mix06. Please confirm.

    We don't feel the need to restrict ourselves to "only technical subjects" on the IEBlog. It's our blog (a generally casual communications mechanism) and frankly we feel free to post on subjects of interest to us and to our audience. Sometimes more us than our audience, and that's OK.

    We expected this one to draw criticism from the "stay technical, please" crowd. My suggestion is to wait for the next post if this one didn't interest you.

    Serious Sam, we don't really police the comments to "stay on topic". The only "main rules" we have is to not use profanity or personally attack people. If you look through the comment threads, you will often find people saying "stay on topic" but it's not (usually) an IE team member.

    Adam, the post you refer to is on the MIX06 site which we on the IE team don't control. I'm assuming that post is from Joshua Allen, IE technical evangelist. Our intent is to have a build available at MIX06, just as he says. And that's as precise as your going to get, sorry.

    Thanks for this reply, Eric. Is embed support for Jscript.NET completely out of consideration for IE7? The reason I ask concerns project under development... having a sense of where IE is headed in the future helps determine our path now.

    I bring this up because Peter Torr raised the possibility in an external forum:
    [Hi,

    There are no concrete plans for this at the moment but that could change.

    We are looking for customer feedback on this (there is very little so far).
    Embedding JScript .NET inside the browser is definitely a "cool" thing to
    do, but unless customers come back and say "Hey, this would really make my
    life easy!" or "This enables a whole bunch of new scenarios for me" it's
    probably not going to happen.

    Peter]

    I (being a customer :>) would be glad to oblige Peter's request for feedback if this is the proper place to do so.

    Serious Sam and others,

    This is the IE Team's blog. We post about things that interest us. They aren't always work related and we're fine with that. It is meant to be much looser than, say, writing KB Articles. It's the same reason that we post team photos from time to time as well. It's about the team as well as the product so you should expect that we'll continue to post "off topic" things at times. It's a blog.

    Totally off-topic:

    input {
    background-color: yellow;
    }

    input[type="text"] {
    background-color: red;
    }

    input[type="checkbox"] {
    background-color: none;
    }

    This renders all input elements with a yellow background in the leaked IE7 build, though all the rest input attributes work as they are supposed to with CSS selectors. Is this (1) a bug, (2) you haven't got the chance to implement it yet or (3) was it done intentionally and the "type" attribute won't be exposed to CSS selectors on the final build?

    @Lordmike: The "Enhanced Security Configuration" for IE is what we internally call "IE-hardening". There's nothing really magical about it-- it's mostly just a lockdown of the zones settings such that almost everything is turned off. IE6 on XPSP2 without hardening has solid security, but you if you want, you can notch up the security sliders using Tools | Internet Options.

    IE7 on Windows Vista will have security protection above and beyond hardening, because Protected Mode IE helps defend the entire platform.

    To Lordmike "Just kinda annoyed at people who steal software then complain about it not working as it should :-). "
    As far as I know, IE is freeware, isnot it? :)
    I understand, why beta isnot available for public, because most people would get infected or just whined about bugs, which are normal for betas. I used beta 1 for 6 months, even with bugs like freezing a few times a day, especially with bookmars. Beta 2 have also a few bugs, the most annoying is, that it removes cookies in about 3 houres, but I am gonna use it, because I am one of a few people, who really like IE and there are still less and less of them. So I should have to wait 1 year or I should have to use an alternative browser, if I just want to have things like tabs and I do not want to instal any extensions? :)

    Chad,

    I'm afraid that the question isn't clear. This is in your RSS feed because we posted it to the blog and you get a feed of our posts. As Bruce and I have mentioned, this is a team blog for the IE team so there will be times where we blog about general things of interest to us. The fact that our local football team did well is a good thing of interest to a lot of us here. :-)

    @TheTOM.SK--
    In normal cases when it was freeware from a company who just make freeware I would agree. But this is Microsoft! Even if it's free, you still need a windows license to run it and therefor it's not really freeware in my eyes anymore. Though I could be hugely mistaken... has happened before :-).
    I can understand why you don't want to install google pack (tried it and hate it) or msn toolbar (even worse then google pack) just for tabs.
    I use IE6, Firefox, Opera, Kongueror and especially lynx.
    We all want IE7 like yesterday, because we have been waiting so long. But I'm one of those who'll have to wait, mostly beause I'm out of testboxes at the moment.

    Holy moly! I just downloaded the developer preview of IE7 and I have never been so disappointed about a software release since Pacman for the Atari 2600. I had been defending you guys at IE development for ages and you made me eat my shoes. The interface is a step down, there is not better CSS support than IE6 and... well I need say no more. The worst part is there isn't even a way to uninstall it. I am now 100% Firefox guy now thanks to IE7. Thanks but no thanks. This is the beginning of the end of MS. You heard it here first.

    You can uninstall IE7 using Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. You need to check "Show Updates" to see the IE7 entry.

    And by the way, you're far from the first, or the last, person to say "beginnning of the end of MS".

    If Frozencow asks how to report bugs in IE7 isn't it be better to point to a site where you can report IE7 bugs such as:

    http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/default.aspx/Channel9.InternetExplorer7Bugs

    than to an old site for reporting IE6 rendering problems?

    I really like the new tab preview feature, and have some ideas to make tabs even better:

    1. Allow multiple rows of tabs like you get in the control panels (display settings). This way, all of the text isn't crammed into an unreadable bit when you have lots of tabs open. (you could make this feature off by default if too many rows of tabs confuses users)

    2. Allow tabs to be rearranged. This would be useful to oragnize your information, like you could put related tabs closer together. This is especially important if you're saving your tab groups because this means that the tabs are living longer (you're saving them and reloading them later).

    3. Allow tabs to be dragged between IE windows. If I have two IE's open side by side on a big monitor, and i'm browsing on one and click on a link, sometimes I want to view that link side by side with the first page. I can then drag that new tab over to the other IE window to make that happen. (Instead of copying the URL, opening a new tab in the other window and then pasting). This is sort of an extension of request #2.

    Is posting on this blog the best way to make these kinds of requests? Or is there another venue that's better?

    Thanks,
    Victor Lee

    Finally, official IE 7 beta has been released, I wanted it at Christmas as the present, but nevermind. Well, anyone knows, where I could find some info about new reg values? I want to add them to my reg file, but I cannot find out, what they actually do. Values: 180A, 180C, 2103, 2104, 2301. Following site was really usefull, but I do not think, that it will be updated sooner than in summer. :'(

    One more question, if I can ask. I have just noticed, that the released preview is the v7.0.5296.0 and the version, that has leaked to internet before was v7.0.5299.0. Does it mean, that 5299 is unstable and I should not have to use it?

    TheTom.SK,

    It is probably not a good idea to use software that isn't officially released that someone broke NDA by pirating onto the Internet. So, no, you should not use 5299 if you are running it.

    Well, we knew it was going to happen, but it fun to watch you try!

    Once again, this Blog should not contain anything but articles about IE.

    Oh, btw, any chance of a survey for this blog? E.g. an ongoing weekly survey for the feedback you guys really need on post topics etc.?

    Sample Survey:

    What is the main reason why you will upgrade to IE7, but choose to use a better browser instead?

    () Firefox's Extensions
    (
    ) Opera's Speed
    () Web Standards Support (CSS, DOM, XHTML)
    (
    ) Not tied to the Operating System
    () An annoying IE Feature that jusk makes using it a pain (e.g. new window opens last page)
    (
    ) Security
    () Extended Bookmarks / Live Bookmarks
    (
    ) Open Bug Tracking System / User input appreciated, noted, and acted on

    You can pretend that the above, is just another rant, but I think you will find, that with this kind of candid feedback, you will be able to identify, what it is that most users hate most about IE.

    @Game Kid.

    Nice link ;-)  Funnie thing is, you can't play!

    You have to be using a browser that wasn't the last / winning player, thus every time I go there, I can't play.

    (hint hint, Firefox dominates all boards, all the time)
