Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2 Now Available
We’re excited to release IE8 Beta 2 today for public download. You can find it at https://www.microsoft.com/ie8. Please try it out!
You’ll find versions for 32- and 64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008. In addition to English, IE8 Beta 2 is available in Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), and German. Additional languages will be available soon.
While Beta 1 was for developers, we think that anyone who browses or works on the web will enjoy IE8 Beta 2. Before the team blogs about our Beta 2 in detail, here’s an overview of what you’ll find in IE8.
We focused our work around three themes: everyday browsing (the things that real people do all the time), safety (the term most people use for what we’ve called ‘trustworthy’ in previous posts), and the platform (the focus of Beta 1, how developers around the world will build the next billion web pages and the next waves of great services).
Everyday Browsing
We looked very hard at how people really browse the web. We looked at a lot of data about how people browse and tried a lot of different designs in front of many kinds of people, not just technologists. As tempting as it is to list here all the changes both big and small in IE8, we’ll take a more holistic approach. That’s how we built the product and how we’d like to talk about it.
From our customer research, we saw that the bulk of user activity outside of web pages involved tabs and “navigation” – the act of getting to the site the user wants to get to. We also knew that adding features has an impact only if they’re “in the flow” of how people actually use the product. Another menu item might matter in a checklist on a blog somewhere, but won’t matter to real people browsing. That’s why IE8’s New Tab experience is so remarkable: it’s obvious – after you see it:
IE8 makes bringing back tabs (and entire IE sessions) users have closed a lot easier; it’s in the natural flow of how users work. IE8 also takes into account that there are often relationships between new tabs that users open, and the browser can make it a lot easier to figure out which tabs go with which. Below, the tabs that came from the links in the search results page are grouped together and colored differently from the headlines the user followed off another page, which are different from links the user followed off other pages:
Navigation – or getting to where you want to – is a lot faster and easier too. Typing in the Smart Address Bar not only searches across Favorites, History, and RSS feeds, but provides a great experience:
We put a lot of different designs in front of users in order to find one that was this effective. It’s easy to scan, with the different sections marked off and one line for each item, and the highlighting is easy on the eye. Deleting typos (or other unwanted suggestions) from this list is also easy – notice the red "x" above appears when a user places his mouse over an item.
Beyond tabs and navigation, people use services all the time. When you have an address but want a map, or want to just select some text and make a blog post out of it, IE8’s Accelerators (formerly known as ‘Activities’) are handy. For Beta 2, we’ve worked with a lot of great partners to deliver a bunch of choices for users. They’re much faster and easier than the “select, copy, new tab, navigate, paste, repeat” process in today’s other browsers. We think users will enjoy the consistent experience they’ll get from service to service, and appreciate being in complete control of which are installed and are the default. We hope that websites (and enthusiasts!) write more of them and give us feedback. Staying up to date with the latest information is a lot easier with Web Slices, that put information directly in your Favorites bar where you can get at it quickly.
This is a good moment to talk about performance. We think about two kinds of performance: real world and lab. In a lab, we measure performance in milliseconds. That’s important work, and we did a lot of it since Beta 1. You’ll find IE8 is a lot faster than IE7 on many sites. We can go through and detail, for example, exactly which Gmail operations are faster in IE8 than other browsers and vice versa.
Real world performance is about how people get their tasks done, and that’s something you don’t measure in milliseconds. We think you’ll enjoy the impact of IE8’s new tabs, Smart Address Bar, Favorites bar, Search box, Accelerators, and Web Slices on your daily browsing.
Visual Search in IE8 speaks for itself. Websites can offer rich search results as you type in the Search box:
After installing IE8, try out Visual Search from the New York Times, Wikipedia, Amazon, or eBay. (Many other sites offer regular text suggestions as well.)
Safety
Safety isn’t about technologies and features, but two words: in control. We think users should be in control… of their settings, their information, what code runs on their machine, of their browser overall.
Previous posts have described what you’ll find in IE8 Beta 2 with respect to the SmartScreen Filter and protection from phishing and malware as well as many other defenses. The XSS Filter is particularly exciting because it offers real people a real defense from a real threat, by default and out of the box. We’ve blogged about InPrivate previously as well. Taken together, these features do a great job putting the user in control of their information.
The reliability improvements in IE8 Beta 2 are big. Crash recovery is nice, but not crashing is even better. Because in IE8 Loosely-Coupled IE (LCIE) separates the frame (the address bar, back button, etc.) from the tabs, and the tabs (mostly) from each other, crashes are more contained and affect fewer tabs than before. We think users will also appreciate having close boxes on all their toolbars so that disabling ones they don’t want – while leaving the ones they do – is easier.
Platform
IE8 is more interoperable with other web browsers and web standards. The contribution of CSS 2.1 test cases to the W3C is an important in order to really establish a standard way to assess standards support. We think that CSS 2.1 remains the most important place to deliver excellent interoperability between browsers. We think developers will enjoy the improvements to the built-in tools, as well as the other opportunities to integrate their sites in the user’s daily life with Accelerators and Web Slices. After deciding to default IE8 to the most standards-compliant mode available, we wanted to be sure to address compatibility concerns for organizations and individuals. Would websites that expect IE8 to behave the way IE7 does create a problem for end-users? Since March, we’ve been telling developers about a small change they can make to their sites to tell IE8 to show their sites as IE7 does. Many have – but there are a lot of sites that may have not yet addressed this. The Compatibility View button (new to IE8 Beta 2) is a good solution to provide end-users a good experience as the web transitions.
Some Important Details
Anyone interested in customizing and redistributing IE8 (the way others have IE7) can find information about the IEAK here. (We’ll have a more detailed post about IEAK and group policy soon.) One important aspect of a beta release is getting feedback; we’re using the same channels as described in this Beta 1 post (for example, this IE Beta newsgroup).

Looks good. There are a few minor problems - CPU can hit 40% for minutes on certain pages - and the interface has locked up a few times, but those should be cleared up by release. Of course, you're still missing some features compared to the competition; notable, built-in spellcheck, decent favorites management (you still have, basically, the IE4 dialogue), and there's no good way to switch between search providers to get different search suggestions (e.g. switching will load the results page; it won't show the suggestions, if available). The lack of changes to Favorites really suprised me (particularly with the curious "Suggested Sites" option). Old interface, no new features - like tagging - no real ability to search favorites or history, etc. On the plus side, WebSlices look cool, the Search Suggest right in the browser is nice, tab opening and switching is much faster, and the Safety features look interesting (even if the UI for some - e.g. the Privacy Report - is still terrible. Honestly, a small non-resizable Window with no ability to search? Not good.) The Activities - particularly Send with Gmail/Hotmail - are very cool. Quite the time-saver, even if it would be better if you included a link back, below the data. Like Microsoft OneNote does, actually. The speed is great! AJAX apps are really fast. I'm running into an issue with URLMON.dll, it causes the browser to crash on sites even in compatibilitiy mode. I tried disabling all add-ons but same thing. Any ideas? Other than that, fantastic release! I love the new find on page UI also.Anonymous

Congrats on the new Beta 2! Can you please make the new close button on every third-party toolbar optional? An option in the "Customize" toolbar menu would be nice. Please also consider moving the "External Script Debugger" menu item from View to Tools where it makes more sense. Also show the "External Script Debugger" menu item in the command bar under Tools. This is fantastic! Everything I had expected of IE8. If it had a built in download manager my life would be complete, but there's always next time! I wish the Inline Search bar navigated to highlighted links on pressing Enter. That's what Firefox does and I rely on it with it.Anonymous

Please consider adding 'Paste and go' to both the cool new address bar and seach bar surely very simple to implement, but very useful. I know its easy to just press enter after you paste, but I think it's these little things that help make this browser better, and it's the little things that turn people to use Opera/Firefox. I REALLY want the inline auto-complete feature to be put back. Ideally, I would want it to fill in the url that I use most frequently, not whichever one comes first (it gets really annoying if I make a typo or the auto-complete doesn't show up before I press enter). You have now had two version of IE to correct this and it still doesn't work correctly - the scrollbar doesn't behave like every other scrollbar in Windows - there is no over highlighting. @8675309 re: clear type You mean turn it off, right? Cause with FuzzyType[TM] turned on, everything looks like bold text because each character is wider than normal. Not to mention the rainbow of colors you see with black text on white, and white text on black. The TV industry learned this years ago, but apparently MSFT thinks they are smarter and can solve a Black and White issue by inserting color. Which just equals fail.Anonymous

Still waiting for some sort of opacity functionality. Is this included in IE8 b2? I think its terribly wasteful to release yet another verison of IE that cannot support the more used aspects of the web in a standard fascion. IE8 will be another "we have to do a workaround" browser that will mess up my work. I´d rather MS dont release it at all.Anonymous

Best version of IE yet! you can tell theres a few bugs and its found a problem and closed at least 3 or 4 times but its in beta! love the new inline search and overall search area, address bar and privacy features as well the security thingys which i dont notice, but i know are protecting me :) a few things such as a good download manager, favourites centre and a bit faster performance/compatibility would be nice but you have already done some great work and im supposing these features will be laucnhed in IE9 or within the new version for Win7. What??? STILL no opacity support??? I thought Scott Dickens said it would be in beta2, but neither filter:alpha(opacity=50) or style.opacity=0.5 seem to work in standards mode. Btw. just a note: When you get around to fixing this, make sure you multiply the alpha filter opacity with the alpha channel in PNG32 images instead of just throwing away the alpha channel of the image. It ruins our nice anti-aliased edges. It looks horrible in IE6+7.Anonymous

I found two major problems with Beta 2. One is an aesthetic issue. The new tab graphics are nice, and I like how they are grouped by colors. However, the active tab is hard to spot. Because of this, I can accidentally pick a wrong tab, or accidentally close the wrong tab (with middle click). The other one is more serious. In any rendering mode but the IE8 Standards one, there is a problem when highlighting page text, when the page is zoomed. The "middle point" that controls how the screen is scrolled up and down as you highlight, it seems to affected by the zooming. It will get bumped further down as you zoom into the screen more and more, the amount of this also depends on how long the page is (on a smaller page, I had to zoom in to as much as 300%, while this comment page does this even at 150%). In extreme cases (very long pages), this middle point shifts so much that IE will think that I'm scrolling the window up, even though the cursor is at the bottom. The middle point is just too far away. In milder cases, I can scroll down while highlighting, but the scrolling is much slower (as if I used the middle click scroll method, but only gave it a small nudge). This makes the new highlight-and-use-accelerators feature nearly impossible to use on pages with quirk mode rendering - nearly all of the web at the moment.Anonymous

I would like to see the ability of moving things around come back (like in pre IE7 versions). I would like to customize all the top bars, to have only the address bar and maybe one button that would give me access to the "rest" of the features. I like the new beta but the three things that I would love to see are
- a download manager,
- a built in spell checker and
- a better feed reeder. I would like to see a feed reader in which I can consolodate the feeds or preferebly read all of the feeds at once. And I would also like the feed reader to support keyboard shortcuts.

Nice work! A major release and some really nice new touches. But I have to echo the comments about organizing favorites. As a Vista user, it's embarrassing that Firefox provides much more extensive options - using the same organize/view menus from Vista - while the IE8 beta 2 dialog ignores Vista UI conventions, is limited, and virtually unchanged for eons. I realize you can't do everything in one release, but being able to properly organize and maintain favorites is pretty fundamental.Anonymous

Totally awesome! This is going to give Firefox and all other browsers a kick in the behind and IE can now compete not because it is put on Windows, but because people WANT to use it! Glad to see so many fixes! We've been busy updating Web Bug Track to ensure the statuses are correct. Well, I was hoping for a much earlier release of IE8 Beta 2 but it was worth the wait. The installation went w/out a glitch and so far, everything is working well. I like the new Smart Address Bar, search bar and other bits here and there. I don't like though that when a recently closed tab is reopened, the new tab that was opened stays open. I think it would be better is the closed tab that the user is reopening again, should either automatically close or load the tab that being reopened. Love tab grouping but the color scheme can get in the way of viewing a page, it's too colorful. Maybe a different grouping can be introduced, such as Windows XP handles Taskbar grouping. Please add a spell checker to IE8. Yes, I'm sure there's an addon out there, but it would be better is IE8 had its own spell checker. I guess that's about it (for now)... Great job on IE8 Beta 2! PS Oh, one more thing: maybe the Search Bar's name -- the one that appears that indicates which search provider you are using -- those letters are a bit too dark. Maybe you should make them a bit lighter, like in the Smart Address Bar.Anonymous

IE8 is shaping up to be a great release. Really impressed. Just one thing though. The new tabs page (about:tabs) could really do with a list of most visited pages. Since I am likely to stay within that group a large chunk of the times, providing easy access to it would help a lot. Other nice to haves: A "Find All" option in the quick find toolbar. A bookmark/feeds manager that supports at least two-pane view (left pane to list the folders, right pane fore bookmarks/feeds). And a download manager - with simple cross session resume should be enough for first iteration.Anonymous

OK, I uninstalled the Google Toolbar for IE using the Vista Control Panel, so this bug is now gone (together with the Toolbar). Still, it is surprising that there is no obvious way to delete the add-ons inside IE8. I am still unable to change the default zoom level (from 125%). So far I have also been unable to get any thumbnails in the Visual Search and e.g. English Wikipedia as a search provider tells me that "search suggestions" are "not available". Even though I have some guess what URL should be written in the column, I am not able to squeeze it there.Anonymous

Looks nice but is still only eyecandy. Please move the focus to following the webstandards. Today it takes twice as long time to write an webpage that works with all browsers compared to writing a page that works with all browsers except IE. If you'r writing an advanced ajax-app replace twice with four or five times as long. If you release IE8 pretending that it follows the standard the problem will only get worse because we then have to adjust our pages to work with both IE6, IE7, IE8 and real browsers.Anonymous

Still, some good stuff: generated content in CSS pseudo-elements now does work well! Less CSS workarounds are needed (IE8 now can use Firefox/Opera/etc. CSS stylesheets, and mines are tricky one)! CSS support is now very, very good.Anonymous

- favorites-bar should be disabled by default and web slices should also be displayed in the favorites sidebar.
- adress autocomplete should be more customizable. I like that it searches the favorites but I still don't want to search my history (other people might like it exactly the other way around).
- favorites management possibilites are weak.
- no download manager.
- internet explorer settings are still the same. Make a more clear user interface.
- error messages on the left side of the taskbar are too cryptic.
- use the same interface for zooming as in office 2007.
- tab thumbnails are not live.
- what about thumbnails while hovering over a tab?
- only the browser history can be deleted automatically when closing the browser. though this sounds all very negative, I think that it is a great and ambitious release.

Indeed, since I installed IE8b2, AVG can't update anymore. And uninstalling IE8b2 didn't cure the crashing Windows Explorer nor a non-updating AVG. This beta has just broken this Vista machine. May I suggest some little more testing before this is released for 'real' :)Anonymous

Thanks, Brian, now it remembers the font size and the zoom level. (Accessibility options in advanced Internet Options.) Another problem is that I failed to install it on my XP SP3 laptop. It said "failure" and it uninstalled it fully after a reboot. I've seen a knowledge base about it but it's too complicated. Wouldn't it be possible to create a troubleshooting script that would try to fix it automatically?Anonymous

I'm a bit disappointed in the standards-compliance changes made between IE8b1 and b2, particularly the new icon for standards-compliant pages. Couldn't Microsoft validate pages themselves for standards-compliance instead of requiring a tag to get rid of the 'broken page' icon standards-compliant pages have? Also, why are intranet sites put into compatibility mode by default? That kind of defeats part of the purpose behind 'standards-compliant mode by default', which is to chivvy people into writing standards-compliant (X)HTML documents.Anonymous

Just installed IE 8 beta 2. Major no-gos for me: very slow opening a new window or even a tab; starts a separate 25MB IE process for every page link I click from in an external application; opens new links either in a new window or overwriting an already open tab, neither of which is the requested behavior of opening in a new tab. Sheesh, how hard is this? Back to Firefox. (Trying IE 8 because Firefox 3.x uses a lot of CPU when I open dozens of tabs even after the tabs are opened.) IE 8 also installed itself as the default browser without permission (that I could remember giving.) At least, that was easily fixed.Anonymous

Impressed by beta 2. Well done. Found an issue with not all images being switched off via dev tools. E.g. this one will not be switched off: <img src=http://somesite.com/somepage.aspx?imgid=12345> It is a minor issue obviously but it would be nice to have it fixed. Thanks, DmitryAnonymous

This gives me the chance to say SHOVE IT!! after the ordeal I had beta testing IE7, which couldnt even install itself, plus the search bar crashes that still persist, the loss of form data when allowing pop-ups from the notification bar, the inability to use the back button without redownloading the entire page, the smart-aleck attitude of developers in the forum who get more pleasure out of one-upping the feedback than they do from fixing bugs, so you have GOT TO BE KIDDING. I was a holdout, I did not go to Firefox like everyone else I knew, but... last month I made the switch, so, hehe,,, no I WONT be wasting 75 hours testing IE8 Beta. Ye-ah!!!!Anonymous

I can confirm, that BETA 2 crashes when accessing OWA2003 in premium mode. There was no trouble with OWA2003 in IE8 Beta 1. When dubbing the error with VS2008 - IE8 Beta 2 produces the follwong error: Unhandled exception at 0x1a4a85df in iexplore.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000. Disassembly: 1A4A85DF mov edx,dword ptr [eax] Error occurs with XP, Vista 32 and 64bit. Hope this helps to fix it!Anonymous

I'm so disappointed. You've finally removed the one barrier that stopped me from moving to Opera: the tab key while typing URLs. The use of tab key to cycle through the matches is seriously changed. After a long 13 years I'll be leaving IE, can't live without my tab key. If I can't have my tab key, Opera sounds good for me. Good job guys, I didn't think it was possible to drive me out of IE but you did it.Anonymous

After installing IE Explorer 8 Beta 2, my Favorites no longer were visible and I could not use the internet at all. I finally uninstalled it after I found it at the bottom of the Control Panel. :-(Anonymous

The IE8 user interface looks so 1998 compared to the stylish and light Google Chrome look. Microsoft needs a real designer on the IE team and assigned to each feature. PMs are no designers! The Office 2007 ribbon guys should redesign the IE8 UI.Anonymous

Regarding the complaints regarding IE's Favorites management: I say, dump the Favorites management dlg, and just make the "Organize Favorites" command open the Favortes folder in Windows Explorer. It's much easier to just use Explorer to manage favorites. (Incidentally, every browser I've ever used has horrible UI for managing favorites/bookmarks.)Anonymous

Further to my last comment there is a oblique reference to this in the release notes - so what I'm to understand is that Windows Search will always index my web history and even if I delete my web history it's still in the index, and the only way to get an indexed web history item is to make it pop up in the "visual search" history suggestion list and then manually delete each item by clicking the red x? Even in "InPrivate" mode? You've got to be joking. Pretty much any user is going to expect that when they delete their web history the web history is GONE. So, code something to remove it from the index, or at least let users go into Windows Search and stop it from indexing their browsing history. Think also about locked-down kiosk machines in which the administrators don't want the previous user's web browsing history to be visible to the next user of the kiosk.Anonymous

Hehe, again that's not MY concern. But let's say I go to match.com, why would I want those I'm presenting to know I'm looking for a date? The only way forward with IE8 I guess is to stop Windows Search. Goodbye fast results in Outlook. I rather liked that. But since you can't choose to eliminate history from Windows Search, that service now goes away for me. Also, in a related note, the "new tab page" shows your history too. Only way around that is to turn off the bloat and go back to a blank tab page.Anonymous
