Steps for Migration
- Create Trust between Windows NT environment and Windows 2003 Active Directory. Check Exchange 2003 Requirements for demonstration on How to create Trust between both
- Open Exchange Administrator console for Exchange 5.5 and provide permissions to Windows 2003 Active Directory Administrator. You need to give permission on three places as mentioned below

To see the demonstration check Exchange 2003 Requirements. Assign "Permissions Admin" to Active Directory Administrator in Exchange 5.5.
- Run ForestPrep and DomainPrep in Windows 2003 environment from the server which needs to be the Exchange server. For demo click Exchange Deployment Tools
- Follow the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832221 for some additional steps before running the ADMT tool
- Before running the ADMT make Active Directory Administrator a part of Administrators group in Windows NT PDC.
- Use ADMT tool to migrate the user accounts from Windows NT to Windows 2003 Active Directory. For demo click Directory Synchronization
- Make sure that Exchange 5.5 has service pack 1 or later installed in order to run Active Directory Connector
- Create Active Directory Connector on Windows 2003 domain in order to make the Exchange 5.5 and user accounts in active directory communicate. For demo click Directory Synchronization
- Run the ADC tool and walk through the 4 steps listed there one by one.
- Before installing Exchange server please make sure that all the pre-requisites are fulfilled for the Exchange 2003 to be installed
- Install Exchange Server 2003. While installing select "Co-existence with Exchange 5.5" as deployment type. See Directory Synchronization
- Check for the logs at every stage to see if there have been some errors.
- Go to Post Installation Steps on Exchange Setup page. Check Moving Exchange Resources
- Migrate the Exchange resources from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003. Please check Moving Exchange Resources
- Go to Active Directory Users and Computers and select the users which you want the mailboxes to be moved. Select users and from Actions choose Exchange tasks. See Moving Exchange Resources for further detail on this.

- From Exchange 2003 change the Functional Mode to native mode
- Delete the Connectors from the Active Directory Connector console and uninstall the ADC tool from the server
