Technet Event - Q&A all questions answered....

At our Technet Mobility event we asked the attendees to text questions to us for the Q&A session...

We managed to cover many of them in the Q&A however we still had a lot left !

I committed to answer all the questions I could and post to my blog... so here they are!

Many people asked questions about future capabilities and roadmap which I can't unfortunately share unless under an NDA :( so please don't slam me for that.

All other questions answered below...

Questions

Q. why doesn't Windows Mobile support WAP push?

A. It does Support WAP Push there is a great article at: https://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/mobilesdk5/html/wce51conOTABootstrappingThroughWAPPush.asp

Q. Is it possible to set other options on the device by policy?

A. It is not possible to set other options by using Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 however SMS Device Management Feature Pack (DMFP) can do this.

Q. Can I find the device ID from a handset

A. Yes you can – take a look at : https://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2006/01/09/510997.aspx

Q. When setting up the device and saving username/password what happens when the domain account password expires and needs changing?

A. The user will be prompted to enter their new password – however you cannot change the username/password from the device. You must change it either on a PC or via Outlook Web Access and then enter the new password on the device.

Q. What happens to the push heartbeat IP connection if a voice call is made/received during the 15 minute heartbeat interval?

A. The device will simply reconnect when the phone call ends.

Q. Will there be the ability to define mobile device policies according to OU in AD or even per Exchange server as opposed to just include/exclude individuals?

A. You can actually do this today however the UI only exposes organizational level options.

Q. Is direct push enabled for the Notes folder in Outlook?

A. Outlook Notes are not supported unfortunately

Q. Can attachments be downloaded on demand, to avoid large files using up bandwidth

A. Yes you can choose which files are downloaded.

Q. When do you plan full html support for email?

A. I’m afraid I can’t comment on future plans on this forum.

Q. What is MS doing to encourage device manufacturers an operators to provide at least one upgrade step for mobile devices? The cynics would regard current practises as a good money spinner as most don't provide upgrade paths.

A. We are making it easier for hardware manufacturers to provide upgrades through additions such as Image Update in Windows Mobile 5. There are obviously some technical requirements to facilitate upgrades.

Q. Can you remotely lock a device if inactivity timeout not set (without wiping it)

A. You cannot do this currently.

Q. What was the rationale for removal of network sync functionality in Activesync 4.x?

A. This was removed due to security concerns.

Q. Does the Direct Push heartbeat work over any IP connection or just cellular, as even whilst I'm connected over Wifi, my device wants and uses a cellular connection.

A. Direct Push will work over any cellular connection. It will revert back to synchronization over WiFi as there is no way to ‘wake up’ the device with WiFi connectivity.

Q. does remote wipe only work on devices sync'ing directly with Exchange server? (i.e. not those syncing through PC).

A. It will still work through a PC also as it is delivered over the HTTPS connection

Q. If you have an application for PC & you want to port it to WM, what kind of issues do you need to take into account for compatibility and performance?

A. The main area is around UI design as the business logic may be similar. Ensuring the user has a great experience using the application is critical as the interface is critical to success.

Q. Device security - is it possible to set a forced timeout rather than rely on idle timeout in case device is in flight mode and cannot be wiped ota?

A. You cannot do this unfortunately. However if the device is in flight mode or off the network – when it reconnects it will wipe.

Q. Is there a matching Windows Mobile 2005 device to compete with the internet mobile email BlackBerry, to allow direct push pop3 email for business users

A. A number of email hosters are providing this solution already. Look at companies like www.4smartphone.net

Q. Any plans to integrate user mobiles as AD objects for ease of admin?

A. If you want to do this today – you can use www.fullarmor.com solution which allows Group Policy and other components. Unfortunately I cannot comment on future capabilities in this forum.

Q. Are there any specific Microsoft certifications for WM solutions architects/developers

A. This is definitely an area we are working on J Watch this space….

Q. I understand the benefits of INSTANT MESSAGING in the enterprise but what ways to manage security concerns?

A. Live Communication Server provides Enterprise Grade Instant Messaging and control of this. The Office Communicator Mobile client provides access to this from your Windows Mobile device!

Q. How many users have already deployed sp2 with AKU2 in a live environment outside of Microsoft?

A. Lots J We have a huge number of customers now taking advantage of this as devices are now available.

Q. Does EAS support least cost routing on devices if they have 3G and GPRS? It would be handy if I am at an office or hotspot to be able to choose the connection. Also is seamless handover between wifi and 3G on the horizon?

A. This is configured through Connection Manager. By default it will use WiFi, 3G and then GPRS but this can be modified. It will seamless switch between them however it will not maintain a session. That can be down using Mobile IP clients today.

Q. When you mentioned that Exchange system manager has to have a tick in the box for allowing non WM5 devices. Does that mean that you can't enforce IT policies on these clients?

A. Correct – you can only implement IT policy on Windows Mobile 5 devices with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack installed.

Q. Does a W mobile device accessing SBS 2003 require it's own CAL?

A. No – as long as you are licensed per user for the appropriate number of users.

Q. one of the benefits of WM5 is the image update. However with the recent Orange C600 update this was not used, so in future will the operators use this feature?

A. Whilst we provide the capability – it’s an OEM/Operator decision if they choose to use it J Hopefully they will embrace Image Update in the future.

Q.Heard that Vodafone is offering device management software. What is involved in this? Do I need it if I already have SMS

A. I would have a chat with Vodafone directly.

Q. Can you access all info within inbox sub-folders realtime (e.g. previously filed with Outlook app) without previously filing email to subfolder from WM5 device (limitation of BlackBerry)

A. Yes you can access all the items in Subfolders.

Q. Is the fast connection with 3G dependent on the device or the SIM card? i.e. can the new iPAQ work over 3G

A. It’s dependant on the device supporting 3G and have a 3G enabled SIM.

Thanks for posting this Q&A, there is some great information in there.  As far as using Direct Push over WiFi, is that something that is technically not possible or something that has been disabled in WinMobile 5 due to battery performance issues?  I've used Direct Push synchronization on a Nokia 9300i with Dataviz RoadSync and was able to be pushed email via the WiFi connection using Exchange ActiveSync.

Has anyone asked Nokia why their 9300i does not support Outlook Notes? Weird. Do they have plans to enable syncing notes?
