Treo 700w and MSFP

Since the launch by Verizon yesterday I've had lots of emails from customers confused as to whether the Treo 700w contains the Messaging and Security Feature Pack.

From Palm's specification on their site: https://www.palm.com/us/products/smartphones/treo700w/specs.epl

It states that the Treo 700w uses Windows Mobile® 5.0.2.0

From my previous post regarding how to tell what version of Windows Mobile 5.0 you are running - https://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2006/01/01/508193.aspx

...it means that the Treo 700w does not use AKU v2.0 and therefore does not contain the Messaging and Security Feature Pack ... Yet....

The new Treo will however connect directly with Microsoft Exchange Server and Small Business Server so businesses can use Outlook Mobile to access email, calendar and contacts wirelessly, wherever they are.  The technologies such as ‘push email’ coming in the Messaging and Security Feature Pack will be available as an upgrade through a future ROM update via the Palm software updater.

Hope that helps clarify the situation.

Jason, thanks for your clarification on this. I appreciate your postings. I just ordered my Treo 700w and will use Goodlink for now until the MSFP is released

Yep, another bust...why would everyone be bragging about releasing the 700w early when it is because they left out ALL the enterprise features!?!?!?!?

The truth is still out there, and the sad truth is that only SYMBIAN phones do Direct Push today...

I just ran across the following article on MSMobiles http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4684.html .

The article details how Microsoft is being sued over push e-mail patent violations and how this may seriously delay the release of the push email features for Exchange.

    Any comments?

We do not comment about pending litigation. We reiterate that we respect the intellectual property rights of others and continue to stand behind our products and encourage customers to purchase, deploy, and use Windows Mobile-based products

Push-email was the big deal with this release. We have waited sooo long and then when its finnaly launched the main feature is missing? What the heck? I want to get rid of my BB and you aren't making it very easy.

Jon - the release of MSFP is defined by the OEMs so look for announcements from the device manufacturers over the coming months (in Q1) who will announce devices containing the MSFP. For upgrades you need to check with the OEM in question and they will provide availability of upgrades for particular devices.

I appreciate it's frustrating for you right now but rest assured in the future every device will contain AKU 2.0 and MSFP - it's just this interim grey period.

I smell a class action lawsuit all over this. There is a tremendous amount of confusion out there. Just look a the other forums. This is turning into a big issue for anyone using an exchange server. We purchased three units and returned them as well the same day, once we realized the DirectPush update was missing. The common opinion is that we were mislead. I took a look at the launch video again, and the 700 was clearly demonstrated WITH the DirectPush capability. Sounds like false advertising to me? I think Palm needs to specifically state when that release is coming or they are going to be faced with a lot of unhappy customers, especially in the enterprise segment! I for one, am going to write a letter directly to Palm's executive management to express my frustration, hopefully they will respond with something concrete.

This is has been /very/ helpful information. I too was caught up in the confusion of "does it have MSFP2 or not... I would be very helpful to have a chart that explains what features you have with the combinations of Exchange (SP2/SP1) and the Mobile Device. Thanks for posting this information!

I was just on Microsoft BetaPlace downloading the Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0 Community Preview to test Windows Mobile 5.0 with Exchange ActiveSync and the download timed-out at 98%. 2% remaining? Such a tease... I then tried accessing http://beta.microsoft.com
