Visual Studio on Windows Vista

Lately I've been spending a lot of time on the upcoming service pack and Vista patch, and I think that you'll be happy with what we've fixed.

    The link only mentioned about 2002 and 2003, how about Visual Studio 6?

    There's a public statement on VB6 available here: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx. Since VC6 was end-of-lifed two years ago (approximately), I don't believe that it will be supported in any way. If you are still using VC6, you should strongly consider moving to VC8, purely based on C++ standards compliance and compiler improvements.

    I'm afraid that I can't really tell you much beyond what Soma already posted http://blogs.msdn.com/somasegar/archive/2006/09/26/772250.aspx, but in the meantime, if you haven't seen this already, you can get some hotfixes from Connect at http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/content/content.aspx?ContentID=3705.

    That VB6 support statement is interesting, because is it still currently impossible to run the setup program for VB6 SP5 or SP6 under Vista, for multiple reasons. see: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=518043&SiteID=1 and http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=948981&SiteID=1

    Mike, that's interesting. I would have expected this to work by now, but it's possible that we'll be shipping an updated Vista shim for the SP6 install. I realize that this isn't very satisfying advice, but hang on and I'll try to get an answer. Thanks for bringing this up.

    Mike, here's the response I got from the VB team on this: We’ve been testing the Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 runtime and IDE on Vista builds since earlier this year.  Both run and install successfully on Vista RTM and are supported per the support statement posted at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbrun/ms788708.aspx.   The Visual Basic 6.0 IDE and SP6 setup needs to be run with UAC on, with the local user running as Admin, running with elevated privileges (right click on the setup exe and select “Run As Administrator…”. Visual Basic 6.0 applications need to be run under the same security/runtime settings (UAC/Admin/Elevated). If you are having issues running under the above environment on Vista RTM, please post your issues on this forum or contact support directly and we’ll help you resolve the issue.
