SharePoint 2010 Search Federation Location Runtimes

Well TechEd North America 2010 is at least done.  As I promised during my sessions at TechEd North America 2010, I will be posting some samples on how to create custom federation location runtime for SharePoint 2010.  SharePoint 2010 includes 3 out of the box federation location runtimes.  One for FAST Search, one for SharePoint Search, and one for OpenSearch compliant search providers.  With this out of the box abiltiies a lot of awesome search user experiences can be done.  However there are some scenarios that may warrant creating your own custom federation location runtime.  Below is a list of scenarios that can come to mind.

  • Leveraging a search engine provider that does not provide a OpenSearch compliant resultset
  • Wanting refiners for your search experience. (OpenSearch won't do this)
