Free ebook: Windows 10 IT Pro Essentials Support Secrets

We’re pleased to announce the release of our newest free ebook, Windows 10 IT Pro Essentials Support Secrets (ISBN 9781509302802), by Ed Bott. DL-StndPDF.png DL-MobPDF.png DL-epub

Introduction

This ebook is for anyone whose responsibilities include training people to use Windows 10.

That group includes full-time professional trainers, of course, but it also includes IT pros and those brave souls who staff the help desk in corporations. Most of all, it includes the incredibly large population of people who have earned a reputation for being “the person who knows Windows.”

With that knowledge comes a seemingly endless stream of questions from friends, family, and coworkers. As Windows 10 moves into its second full year and begins to take over an increasing share of the installed base of PCs, many of those questions are going to begin “How do I…”

That’s where this ebook comes in. My goal here is to introduce the building blocks of Windows 10 to you in a way that can help you answer those questions quickly. It also offers the kind of information you need to go one step further, offering the kind of extended details about how Windows 10 works that might, just might, answer that next question before it’s even asked.

I’m grateful to the developers and designers at Microsoft who are building Windows 10, for giving me an operating system that’s fun to write about. I’d also like to thank Microsoft Press, which gave me complete editorial independence for this project. Every word in this book comes from my personal experience. I hope you find it useful.

I encourage you to share your feedback about this book directly with me. Email your comments to me at feedback@realworldwindows.com.

Re: Tony MorrisseyI also tried to update from 8.1 to 10.First downloaded the ISO & burned it to DVD.This failed. Then tried running the update by clicking on the free update that I didn't do until July 29, 2016.This also failed without any message other than the update had failed. Gave up late on 7/29.Now my Windows 8.1 is running much slower. Can I get a replacement for the ISO file that I downloaded & ran before the deadline?Or find out how to fix 8.1 after the Win 10 updates failed?

Try to creat bootable USB Media from ISO file using Windows 7 image download tool than boot from and try the Upgrade again. if failed do clean install und try to activate with your Windoes 8 serial number Good luck Etienne

As this is aimed at an "IT Pro" audience one year into Win10's launch, I feel it lacks the technical information I would have expected. An average IT Pro should be able to change desktop backgrounds and configure Windows Defender by now. When we get to the meat by Chapter 8 (Troubleshooting and recovery) we are on page 105 and then have only 9 pages of an introduction, including one on how to reset the PC - not what the average user wants as a solution. I would recommend this book to those who have never used Win10 and have had limited experience in working with previous version - perhaps jumping in from XP for the first time. IT Pros will, in my view, get best use from this eBook by providing it to such users. I, like another who left an earlier comment, would welcome a technical book on how Win10 "ticks" so that we can delve below the veneer and provide support to help users keep their valued PC working.

Ditto. I have not seen very much technical support works written for the advanced desktop support specialist like myself . Mind you that nothing has really changed just moved around, shuffled puzzle pieces. Maybe more poweshell scripting for those that need to clean up tiles and more regedit how to do's . We are looking for the Second or.Next Level Resource and Management Book for a Domain Work Environment..Thanks!Jason SumnerSenior IT Specialist

The last time I flawlessly upgraded a computer to a new "Operating System" was MS-DOS 6.22. After that, MS introduced the "Windows Registry" and ever since there was no way to put a new OS on an old computer without weeks of grief. It was a match to the death between PnP in one corner and a gaggle of incompatible printers, drivers, modems, scanners, mice, keyboards, internet configurations. I don't quote the bible much, because I first would have to read it, but that thing about "don't put new wine into old pipes, put new wine into new pipes" does seemingly give good advice about computer Operating Systems. I'll keep Windows 7 until it dies. If I want grief, I go to a funeral instead. Plus there's free ham. If I had Win 10, on a new computer, I would thank Ed Bott for writing this book. Because he is usually more right than Microsoft itself.
