Tuesday Feb 12th 2008

From the desk of Ben Serebin, President of the NY Exchange Users Group

We have our upcoming monthly meeting on Tuesday 2/12. Doors open at 6pm, and meeting starts at 6:30pm. New RSVP details, so see below. As always, meetings are free (free pizza dinner), open to all, excellent raffle items (Office 2007 Professional, Vista Ultimate, & Exchange 2003 Server), and a great learning environment for folks.

This should be an excellent meeting on Tuesday about Good Technology's sync solution (GMM). I also blogged about my first hand deployment of GMM on my Exchange via my new Palm Centro, and sadly had to give up GMM and return to ActiveSync on it (I still have my BlackBerry as well, don't worry). To read more about this, checkout https://ehlotech.blogspot.com/2008/01/first-hand-feedback-of-activesync.html .

Another item I would like to highlight is a new user group (National Information Security Group which has close ties with the Boston Area Exchange Server User Group. See below for more information on this new group and their upcoming meeting on Mon Feb 11, titled "Cyber Surveillance and Employee Monitoring - What Techniques Are Available, Should We Even Use Them and What Are Employer/Employee Rights?"

And I posted a survey at on our website, that asks "Plans to upgrade to Exchange 2007" and "Do you have a DR solution"? https://www.nyexug.com on bottom left of the menu bar.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting,

-Ben

P.S. Oh, and I might have a surprise for folks attending the meeting...

Interesting Events Happening

The National Information Security Group (NAISG) has just formed a New York City chapter, and will hold its second meeting on Monday, February 11 at the Microsoft office in Manhattan. NAISG started in the New England region and has close ties with the Boston Area Exchange Server User Group and the Boston Windows Server User Group; we would like to do the same for the NYC chapter.

The keynote presentation will be "Cyber Surveillance and Monitoring – Should We, How Do We, And What Are Our Rights As Employers And Employees?" to be presented by Brad Dinerman, former chair of the Boston Area Exchange Server User Group, founder and president of NAISG, and Microsoft MVP. The presentation will also include demonstrations of common software and hardware utilities such as keystroke loggers. Details about the presentation and the group in general can be found at https://nyc.naisg.org.

1. FEBRUARY MEETING (Monday, 2/11)

A> "Cyber Surveillance and Employee Monitoring - What Techniques Are Available, Should We Even Use Them and What Are Employer/Employee Rights?"

Brad Dinerman, founder and president of NAISG, Microsoft MVP, author of Windows Server 2003 Networking Recipes and Vice President of IT at MIS Alliance, will lead a discussion on issues regarding employee monitoring. He will identify some of the key issues from both an employer's and an employee's perspective, such as having acceptable use policies and the right to monitor email; and solicit thoughts and feedback from the audience. Demonstrations of common tools such as key loggers will be given. This presentation will be of interest to anyone in the IT and security field, management and those involved in HR.

>> If you have not yet done so, please send an e-mail to Meetings-NYC@naisg.org indicating that you plan to attend the meeting, as we have a limited number of seats available. We need to know your full name due to restrictions by building security, and you will have to provide a photo ID upon entering the building.

AND SPEAKING OF PIZZA...Does your company want to sponsor pizza for this or for an upcoming meeting? We are always in need of organizations to provide the pizza sponsorship. If interested, please see https://nyc.naisg.org/Sponsors for costs and benefits and then let us know. (Amongst other things, we'll provide a table at the meeting on which your company can provide literature or product demos for members.)

The meeting will be on Monday, February 11, at 6:30 PM. The meeting will be held at the Microsoft in Manhattan. [Directions are on our Web site at https://nyc.naisg.org/meetings.] The meeting will start with a general introduction to the group, followed by an open Q&A period and then the presentation.
