Last night (or about two months ago if you are catching up on the blog in January 2006) we had an evening full of Compact Framework content, which was great - here's some tidbits I picked up from last nights presentations.
Compact Framework 2.0 runs on the following devices
- Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition (SE)
- Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC and Smartphone
- Windows CE 5.0
This means there's no back-compat for Windows CE 4.x or Pocket PC 200x devices.
Compact Framwork 2.0 supports 98% of CF 1.1 applications (based on testing over 500 existing Compact Framework applications) - this means you don't need a side by side install of CF 1.0 and 2.0 on the same device.
Compact Framework 2.0 covers approximately 30% of the desktop framework functionality in about 8% of the size - The size is about 2MB compressed, or about 5MB uncompressed. Scaling this up, does that mean that the full desktop framework could be replicated in about 6MB (compressed) ? <g>
Support for headless devices is coming in CF 2.0 SP1 (Woot! \o/) - there's something to look forward to!
Also, that Anil Dhawan chap presented a session on writing managed Bluetooth applicaitons using the Windows Embedded Source Tools for Bluetooth (WESTB) shared source class library - turns out this is a real time saver (but I already knew that).

According to the .NET CF team at http://blogs.msdn.com/netcfteam/archive/2005/10/11/479793.aspx, Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC first edition is supported, but Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone is not supported.
