anyone write code to translate the binary, or convert the binary to hex/ascii and work this out by hand ?

You don't need to write code if it is already freely available... there are several services available if you google "binary to ascii converter" http://www.roubaixinteractive.com/PlayGround/Binary_Conversion/Binary_to_Text.asp
