SUA SDK for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2

The news is not new and you may already be aware that the SUA Utilities and SDK pacakge for Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 is released after a really long time. As I pointed out earlier in a related post, this release doesn't really introduce any new features and it is mostly bug fixes and some performance improvements. Just like it is generally said that Windows 7 fixes Windows Vista, you can apply that here since feature-wise, it is same as Windows Vista SUA SDK.

A point worth noting is that the UNIX-side components for SSOD have not been released as of now and they are scheduled for the end of this month. Those who use SSOD components would know that the last SSOD release was only during the Vista/Longhorn beta period and the binaries for newer *nix flavors were not released. They are being taken care of now and following is the list of flavors that would be supported -

  • Hewlett Packard HP UX 11i v1
  • IBM® AIX® version 5L 5.2 and 5L 5.3
  • Novell® SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server 10
  • Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® 4 server
  • Solaris™ 10, Scalable Processor Architecture (SPARC)-compatible versions only

For the older *nix flavors, you will have to use the older releases of SSOD and that should work just fine since Password Synchronization and Server for NIS components aren't being updated. The Linux binaries would be released for 32-bit architecture and the sources have been updated so it would be easier to compile them for the 64-bit architectures. I will publish the steps for compilation and other information, once I get my hands on it.

    There was a survey carried out end of last year on  http://www.suacommunity.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=17698 I took part in the survey and would like to know what Microsofts plans are with SUA? Is it going to be stalled (as it is currently), is it going to be terminated or might it be revitalised with an injection of up-to-date code development tools and promotion on platforms other than Win7 Ultimate and Enterprise? Microsoft ought to at least acknowledge that many of its customers took time to fill out the survey. Anything else is just plain rude. Better even would be presenting a roadmap for where Microsoft wants SUA to go. It has lots of potential and could be used to lure in UNIX hungry users who currently choose MacOSX or Linux.

    Are you going to release any updates to SUA? Especially newer versions of GCC and Binutils would be essential to have.

    There are no plans as such. SUA releases have always been planned with the OS version upgrade so far and I expect the next update would be with Windows 8.

    @Robert - It's beyond my control but I will convey this to the product group and I just hope things work out favorably.
