New Version of POS for .NET Announced

At the National Retail Federation show in New York City on Jan 15th we announced plans to release our next version of POS for .NET version 1.11 later this quarter, with support for new device classes including Biometrics, Electronic Journal, Bill Acceptor, Image Scanner and more. POS for .NET supports the Unified POS v1.11 specification ratified at the NRF show, including standard changes for ClearInput, SmartCard and Printer base classes. POS for .NET is a class library which provides .NET applications with a simple and consistent interface for communicating with Point of Service (POS) peripheral devices, and is used by embedded vendors to write software components, or service objects, for their devices, and enables Plug and Play functionality for Windows Embedded for Point of Service customers.

At last! It's been awhile since the last POS for .NET v1.11 updated, we've been having lots of difficulties with EPSON TM-U220A receipt printers lately... It would even better if Microsoft decided to upgrade it into POS for .NET v2.0 :) since the .NET Framework itself has been upgraded into v3.0 nowadays. Where can we subscribe for the latest news on POS for .NET newest upgrade available for the market? Thanks!

  1. WEPOS vs. POS for .NET POS for .NET stands for Microsoft Point of Service for .NET. POS for .NET is the .NET implementation of the UnifiedPOS specification maintained by NRF/ARTS for the Retail and Hospitality vertical industry. POS for .NET comes as a Software Development Kit (SDK) and an associated Runtime. WEPOS stands for Windows Embedded for Point of Service. WEPOS is a Windows Embedded Operating System optimized for the Retail and Hospitality vertical industry. POS for .NET is included in WEPOS.
  2. Will you need to pay for it in the future? POS for .NET is available as a free download on the Microsoft Download Center. There is no plan at this point to change this.
  3. Is it easy to use POS for .NET on the .NET Framework 2.0? POS for .NET is built on the .NET Framework 2.0. You actually need to use a version of the framework greater or equal to 2.0. So, yes, it is very easy to develop applications using POS for .NET and the .NET Framework 2.0.
  4. Is it stable with MySQL 5.0? POS for .NET is agnostic of the type of database engine you are using. (How about SQL Express 2005?) Have fun with POS for .NET v1.11! Sacha

WEPOS is just the operating system - it does not provide POS software-type functionality.  POS for .NET can be used to help you write POS software, but again, it is not a POS application. ~Shayna

Noris, A good resource for newbies to POS for .NET is our newsgroup at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.embedded.pointofservice&lang=en&cr=US.  Some of our product group members and a number of our MVPs frequently help answer questions there. To answer your questions:

  1. POS for .NET is supported on Windows XP Pro, WEPOS, Vista Business, and Vista Enterprise.
  2. Check out this blog article: http://blogs.msdn.com/pointofservice/archive/2007/04/02/channel-9-video-on-wepos-and-pos-for-net.aspx.  There's a short video there on using POS for .NET.  Other resources are available on MSDN: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms828083.aspx.
