Combining the IIS Configuration Reference with Configuration Editor

The IIS Configuration Reference is a great document to combine with the IIS Configuration Editor in the Administration Pack for IIS7.

Config Editor doesn't include documentation on the individual attributes, elements or sections. This means that there isn't any additional information to explain what users might be setting when they commit their configuration changes.  Now with the IIS Configuration Reference it is easy to quickly look up what the individual configuration settings do.  The additional information contained within the reference documents provide some valuable suggestions for each of the configuration sections.

Here are some tricks you can use by combining IIS Configuration Reference and Config Editor:

  • Quickly lookup documentation by copying the Section from Config Editor and appending it to the Reference URL:
  • Use View By Schema to match Config Editor's view
  • Use View Alphabetically to quickly look up an attribute
  • Config Editor provides individual settings validation to prevent invalid config from being written
  • Use Config Editor's Configuration Search to see what your current config looks like and what is set for a given section
