MSSCCI Interface for Team Foundation Version Control

A frequently asked question about SQL Server 2005 Management Studio is whether or not it will integrate with Team Foundation version control in the same way that it integrates with Visual Source Safe.

Years ago, Visual SourceSafe established an interface called MSSCCI (Microsoft Source Code Control Interface). Over time, that interface has become something of a de facto standard.  Many IDEs support MSSCCI, including SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (which is built on the Visual Studio 2005 IDE), which is how Visual SourceSafe integrates with it.

The integration between Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio 2005 is MSSCCI + ‘a little bit’. That is why there is no default integration between Team Foundation Server and SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. We currently plan to release a MSSCCI interface for Team Foundation Server right around launch (November 2005). It won’t be in the box, but it will be widely available. This interface will work with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio, but it will only have version control functionality.

Dave McKinstry blogged about [Team System source control and VS.NET 2003/VB6/...] the plans for a Team Foundation Server MSSCCI interface that he learned about in Doug Neumann’s Team Foundation version control breakout session at TechEd 2005.
