SAP Support of Windows Server 2008 R2

Since this is my first blog entry, I’ll start with a little introduction:
I’m a Microsoft Employee since beginning of 2010, based at SAP headquaters in Germany. I’m working as a Software Engineer within the SAP platform team which ports SAP software to Windows and SQL Server. A team which is jointly staffed by SAP and Microsoft. My specific focus is in developing and testing SAP's Upgrade and Installation Tools on Windows and SQL Server. But so much about me – here’s what I have to blog about today.

SAP has announced support for Windows Server 2008 R2 as of 12-Nov-2010 for the following releases:

  • Systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SR3
  • Systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.0 EHP1 SR1
  • Systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.1 (incl. SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 SR5)
  • Systems based on SAP NetWeaver 7.1 EHP1 (incl. SAP NetWeaver CE 7.1 EHP1)
  • SAP NetWeaver CE 7.2

With the previous released support for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, customers can now benefit from the new features introduced in SQL Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Please always read SAP Note 1486772 (login required) for details on how to install SAP NetWeaver on Windows Server 2008 R2.
Customers which are using the Failover Cluster Feature must follow the instructions in SAP Note 1490337. It contains some corrections for the Installatuion Guide.

SAP also added support for upgrading 4.6C, 6.20 and 6.40 based systems to releases greater than 7.0 on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 (R2).

With that SAP customers can get their old SAP systems running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and start the upgrade on the new OS.

Remember that SAP does not support those old releases on Windows Server 2008 R2 if you do not start the upgrade immediately after the system copy.

For example:

A customer wants to upgrade his ERP system and migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Additionally he wants to exchange his old hardware.

So he installs Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 R2 on the new hardware, copy the old SAP system with a homogenous system copy to the new hardware and start the upgrade.

Due to the new OS, SQL and hardware the upgrade is much faster and he only has to do 3 steps.

    Can we install R/3 4.7 Ext. set 110 on Windows 2008 R2 ?

    No, only a system copy is supported.

    This blog definitely has very broad collection. The resources are really comprehensive. I have been visiting at least two or three times a week.     Thanks for the blog.  It helped me a great deal with a customer platform migraiton pursuit which will include upgrade of SAP with WAS 640.

    Thank you for sharing, But what I want to know if i change my last used Windows Server 2003 with this new Windows server 2008 r2, while I am usinf SAP r/3 6.0, should I have to change the Version of SAP r/3 or have to just upgrade it.

    I have installed SAP 4.7 on windows XP and Windows 2003. but i could not install.......... when installing getting error like writing error on disk c,  prevmti.dll missing. when trying to open R3dllins the shared file is not showing. can any one help me and tell me the correct operating system for SAP 4.7

    Hello, does SAP R/3 really need SQL enterprise and if so, which enterprise features are being used and can I live without them and run on standard anyway? Please let me know. Thanks in advance! BR, Ronald
