Visual Studio "Orcas" and .NET FX 3.5 Beta1 shipped!
Today we signed off on the Beta 1 release for Visual Studio “Orcas” and .NET FX 3.5.
I am very proud of what my team has accomplished and want to take this opportunity to thank them for the great work they have done – in terms of innovation, new scenarios that we are enabling through a set of rich features and a high focus on quality through the project. Between support for the latest platforms including Windows Vista, Office 2007, Longhorn Server and the Web, significant improvements in developer productivity and taking the next step forward in our Application Lifecycle Tools journey with VSTS and TFS, I know we have got an awesome product in the making.
The VS Pro and VSTS products are at Beta1. As part of this we are also putting out CTPs (Community Technology Previews) of the Express SKUs as this is the first time that we are making Express products for “Orcas” available to our customers.
To date, we have seen over a quarter of a million downloads of the various Orcas CTPs which is a testimony to both your excitement for this product and effective feedback we are consistently receiving from you all. This is really ensuring to help us build the right product for you and our many customers.
Orcas Beta 1 bits for the various different product SKUs will be available at the MSDN Visual Studio Futures site over the next day or so. The team and I are looking forward to hearing your feedback on Beta1.
Namaste!

New features are nice and welcome, but what i really really would like to see is that vs.net does not consume SOO much memory and performance. e.g.
- open a .xml (or .xaml) file->takes ages
- use the wizard to create a new (wpf) application ->takes up almost 1 minute taking 90% cpu and when it has finally created the project it consumes 167MB memory and 139MB virtual ram (Note that this on an average 3Ghz pc with 2GB RAM installed running XP SP2)

April 21, 2007
Hi Steve, In Orcas Beta 1, LINQ to SQL (previous name DLinq) has enhanced the functionality from the May 2006 LINQ CTP. You can find it in System.Data.Linq namespace in System.Data.Linq.dll. New in this release is that DataContext provides optimized modes for read-only use and serialization . Also new is that DataShape streamlines eager loading capabilities and adds the ability to set queries on relationships. Some of this functionality existing in the March 2007 CTP of Orcas, but Beta 1 offers more stability and better integration across the product. There is a short video describing this functionality at: http://blogs.msdn.com/charlie/archive/2007/03/05/march-ctp-samples-overview-video.aspx In addition to the LINQ to SQL updates, we now have IDE support for LINQ features (Intellisense, formatting, quick info/parameter help). You can subscribe to Charlie Calvert's RSS feed off the C# dev center (http://csharp.net) to get looped in more team content around the beta. Thanks! Raj (C# Group Program Manager)Anonymous

Thank you. Matt Warren spoke on the topic of disconnected objects here http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1179601&SiteID=1 "There is an upcoming feature that automatically databinds LINQ to SQL objects directly to webforms that use these API's to communicate changes back into the DataContext. There is also a technology in the works that automatically serializes LINQ to SQL objects to other tiers, change tracks and data binds the objects for you on that tier and serializes the objects back, solving the cyclic reference serialization problem and the indescribable schema problem for objects with change sets; which seems to match what many of you are describing. " I'm wondering if this made the beta 1 ? Thanks againAnonymous

Hey Soma, Sorry for annoying you as ever! Just asking if you know when the self extract media will be available for all? I hope the noise I made on March CTP has nothing to do with the delay :D Speaking of March CTP, is there anything we need to know regarding uninstalling it ? Any tip/trick or even a gotcha ? Thank you very much,Anonymous
April 21, 2007
Hi Steve, The two features that Matt referred to are not in Beta 1. We'll let everyone know when these make it into a drop. You can also keep an eye out on Scott Guthrie's blog at http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu -- his team is working on the LINQDataSource control that will make it easier to integrate with Web UI. RajAnonymous
April 21, 2007
Thanks again for your response. I hope the next release has the second part of Matt's quote. I don't work in 2-tier environment very often in the real world, so I find that part a requirement. (I want to use DLinq with a SmartClient that calls WebServices). I require the object to be passed through my services layer - as my UI knows nothing about the database and never touches it directly. Thanks again.Anonymous

Hi Adam - I apologize that we have many VPC steps and it sounds like one (step 9 I believe) you might have missed. Specifically it says that after you download and start to install the image, you will be prompted for the location of the base image. At this time you should point to the Base01.vhd that you extracted earlier and click OK. If you still have troubles please email me directly at cscott@microsoft.comAnonymous
