SQL Server Data Tools Preview update for August 2015

The SQL Server Data Tools team is pleased to announce an update for SSDT Preview is now available. The SSDT Preview update for August 2015 includes a new unified setup for both Database and Business Intelligence (BI) tools in Visual Studio 2015.

SQL Server Data Tools – One installer for Database and Business Intelligence tools

SQL Server Data Tools has been the brand name for both SQL Server Database and Business Intelligence tools shipping into Visual Studio since 2012. We are pleased to announce that starting with our SQL Server Data Tools Preview for VS2015 all these tools will be included in one installer. In the current release SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) support has been added, with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) coming in a future update. This dramatically simplifies how users install and update their SQL Server tools inside Visual Studio. We’re sure you will enjoy trying out the latest SQL Server features in Visual Studio and look forward to hearing your feedback!

New setup interface

For those of you used to updating SQL Server Data Tools you’ll notice there is a new configuration page allowing you to choose whether to install the Business Intelligence products:

SQL Server Database tooling is always installed since it is part of the core Visual Studio experience. For now SSIS tools is the only additional option available, with SSAS and SSRS coming soon.

SQL Server version support across the tools

Database tools will continue to support SQL Server 2005 through to SQL Server 2016, including Azure SQL DB. The Business Intelligence projects continue to have a different support matrix. Please note that during the Preview period support for versions of SQL Server earlier than SQL Server 2016 may be limited. In the SQL Server 2016 RTM time-frame support for earlier SQL Server versions will be improved.

Visual Studio version support across the tools

The single installer for DB + BI tools is only available for Visual Studio 2015. Future Visual Studio versions will also benefit from this single installer, but do note that for Visual Studio 2013 you will need to install SSDT Database tools and SSDT-BI separately.

Known issues:

  • SSIS tools require Visual Studio 2015 to be previously installed due to a known issue in the Visual Studio Isolated Shell installer. This issue will be fixed as a part of Visual Studio Update 1.
  • SSIS tools may not support Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 or lower version of Windows.

This is great news!  I'm excited about the changes coming down the pipeline, and I can't wait for the RTM of SQL 2016. That said - "SSIS tools may not support Windows 7" is a bit of a dealbreaker, as my corporate environment hasn't moved to Win 8/10 yet.  Why did you say "may not" and not "will not"?  Is that a limitation in the preview that will be addressed at RTM?

@Paul - my understanding is that this is a limitation at present and the SSIS team has indicated it may change before RTM.

Great news! But reading the post, I'm not clear about support for earlier DB version. Is SQL Server 2012 supported or do I still need to work using Visual Studio 2012?

It is indeed unfortunate that this is currently not yet supported on Windows 7, since this means I can not try it at work at the moment. Can you confirm if this specific preview contains SSIS 2012 support? (I read 'limited support for earlier versions' during the preview phase), but I am mostly interested in SSIS2012 support in VS2015 atm. If it is not in yet, when do you expect SSIS2012 to be in the preview, is it planned in the next preview or is it further away? (assuming you will do multiple previews where you expand the feature set).

Great to hear, Paul!  Not only does the unified installer simplify installation, it's a big step that will allow us to use a single tool for both database and BI development.  I hope SSDT BI development will support targeting previous version by SQL 2016 RTM, at least for SQL 2008 R2 onwards.  That's a big pain point for BI developers.

RTM updates will provide the most stable and reliable feature set including SQL Server versions support. And Preview update is to deliver new features and enhancements as early as possible for try-out and feedback. Preview feedback will contribute to RTM update. This is a release pattern that is started recently. Soon, we will have one SSDT RTM update and one SSDT Preview update per Visual Studio version which will simplify the download and installation of SQL Database, AS, RS, IS projects in Visual Studio. In this August 2015 preview, SSIS preview for SQL Server 2016 is added first. It is not a fully scoped SSIS release yet but an initial preview that includes the support for VS2015 and SQL Server 2016 CTP. For SSDT one-installer change, AS and RS support will be added in Preview soon and SSIS will also expand its support for other SQL Server versions. Once these features are stabilized in Preview, it will be released in RTM update. Please note that AS, RS and IS one-installer in VS2015 and support of SQL Server versions are key scenarios that all teams in SSDT are trying to enable as soon as possible.

This is interesting, yet still confusing for someone not deeply into the SSDT/Visual Studio/BIDS morass. I really just want to get my work done. Is there a comprehensive document that ties tools to use case, i.e. "If you build databases you need..."? or even "SSMS provides this functionality, SSDT adds this, but requires this"

Are we expecting a SEP 2015 update anytime soon. A timeline of future releases/functions would be very helpful. At client site pending the developers base image requirements. I would like to go with VS2015, though missing the Reporting Services authoring ability for SQL2014 SP1.

Tested and deployed an SSIS package to my SQL Server 2014. Works.

Are there any news about when the full SSDT-BI (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS) for Visual Studio 2015 will be relased?
