Dell Does Mass Personalisation

I love what Dell is doing here with www.dell.com/art – it’s long overdue and plays to the growing theme of mass personalisation. TrendWatching had a great report on this last month. They’re heading down a similar route and perhaps beyond Zune Originals where you own the look of your laptop. Where can we look to for the next trend? Mobile phones….remember when press on covers were all the rage for Nokia phones?

My prediction is we’ll see a huge rise in the sale of Crumpler laptop cases as people start to protect and cosset their beautiful new laptops rather than treat them as just a piece of kit. Even their Gimp case comes in Limited Edition to go with your Limited Edition laptop.

I wonder how many Mac users have a case of some sort for their Mac? A high % I reckon.

In my experience, Mac users actually don't use a case any more than anyone else. Perhaps because they see the "beauty" being encompassed in the whole of the machine and that a few scratches won't actually impair that.

hmm, made me think John...I have covers for both my Vaio's but not my Mac though I never take my Mac out with me so that may be why. on the other hand, I remember seeing Tom Raftery at Web 2.0 in Berlin last year and he'd dropped his MBP on the trip over and was distraught at a small scratch on it. I know I'd be the same way about any of my kit but maybe just a personal thing rather tha specific to Mac folks.
