Found my Touch

An HTC Touch arrived at my front door this morning at 08:30 and in a sure sign that I'm loosing my geek, I actually had another hours nap before I unboxed it. It was worth the wait though and I've uploaded a few shots to Flickr. Initial impressions

  • Smaller than I thought - much smaller than an HTC Excalibur for example (see photo comparison)
  • The unboxing experience or "OOBE" just gets better and better from HTC. The packaging is really very nice. Not quite iPod or Zune but not far off
  • TouchFlo took me some time to find. I expected it to be across the OS but it's specific to HTC's "cube" application (see short video)
  • Once found, it's pretty addictive and does actually work across the OS when it's been initiated
  • The contacts app in the cube is terrific - I know it's just photos of people in a 3x3 matrix but it's done very well
  • Speed - seems a little slow but that may be me getting used to how much "force" is needed on the screen

I'm off to spend a weekend with it and will report back on my findings. Will it replace my trusty QTEK 8500??

Simple, elegant, its looks very cool and is well small... but sadly its not 3G... I'm sticking to my frankenstein HTC Hermes unlocked from Orange, now on 3, running cough Windows Mobile 6 cough

Hi Jas - yep, the Hermes answers the main deficiency I've found with the Touch - that being the Pocket PC OS really favours a keyboard, particularly if you're a texter like me. I really like the Touch but right now it's challenging to be my second device over my HTC Excalibur and my QTEK8500 will remain my main device even though it is WM5. More a fact that I've always been a Smartphone guy rather than Pocket PC from he days when I worked in that division of MSFT.
