updated – in memory of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough, I’ve removed the quote and image that was here. The quote will live on but as Colin said in the comments, some things really are more important. The quote at the bottom seems more fitting.

Taken in NikeTown NYC last weekend. A classic quote by the great Bill Shankly…but still looks better when read in Liverpool where I am this weekend.

A man of many great quotes in fact

  • There are only two teams in Liverpool; Liverpool and Liverpool Reserves
  • If Everton were playing at the bottom of the garden, I'd pull the curtains
  • If a player is not interfering with play or seeking to gain an advantage, then he should be
  • The trouble with referees is that they know the rules, but they do not know the game.
  • Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present, it was her birthday. Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves

and one that perhaps should be remembered more of late…

  • At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques

I was brought up with this quote and whilst it started to lose its relevance after Heysel it became meaningless on April 15, 1989. I remember exactly where I heard the news from Hillsborough, and I'll never forget the way the feeling got worse as the number of dead rose as we drove home. As Liverpool fans we'll never forget Shankly, but we should remember the 96 first - I doubt Nike will ever honour them

Colin - thanks for sharing. Like you I was brought up with the quote and somehow I'd never really put the quote at the two events together which now seems hard to believe....thanks for helping me to recognise it. like you I remember exaxtly where I was when I heard the news and as I travelled home and saw the horror unfold on the TV I couldn't believe my eyes. I drove past the ground a few months back (after leaving Anfield Cemetery as it happens) and as always, there were people paying their respects at the Shankly gates and the memorial. In respect of the 96 I'm going to remove the image and replace with soemthing more fitting. thanks again Steve
