How to be interesting

I love this post. by Russell Davies on how to be interesting. Not sure I can live up to all of his assignments but the advice is great. For those who don’t want to read the whole thing (shame on you) here are the two keys (more inspiration for the short book I want to write)

  1. The way to be interesting is to be interested. You’ve got to find what’s interesting in everything, you’ve got to be good at noticing things, you’ve got to be good at listening. If you find people (and things) interesting, they’ll find you interesting.

  2. Interesting people are good at sharing. You can’t be interested in someone who won’t tell you anything. Being good at sharing is not the same as talking and talking and talking. It means you share your ideas, you let people play with them and you’re good at talking about them without having to talk about yourself.

But you knew that already right? :)

Building on point #1, my father had good advice about meeting people and engaging with them.  He said that too often people start off the conversation with the question 'What do you do?'  But we are paid to work our jobs every day and in a social context talking about work even more can be, well, just more work.  He made a point of always breaking the ice in conversation with the question 'What do you enjoy doing?'  That opens up much more 'interesting' and enthusiastic responses.  Unless, of course, like Steve and I, you work at Microsoft and that is what you enjoy doing.  Just thought that I would share that.  :-)
