Silverlight - the nudge some softies needed

First day back in the office post holidays and post Vegas. The long weekend gave be plenty of time for reflection on Mix as an event.

It worked for me on a number of levels and I suspect it's the same for several other softies. A few things specifically I felt after leaving Vegas:

  1. It restored my faith that when this company really wants to, it can turn out some stunning, magical work. Silverlight is an example of that but so is Expression and even free products like Windows Live Writer.

  2. Not only can we turn out great work but we can still make smart decision. Like making Silverlight and the runtime x-platform. Obvious perhaps, but brave and smart. Making the runtime programmable by dynamic languages was also predicted (by Mary Jo) but in days of yore, we'd have passed that up.

  3. The Ozzie effect is what I'd hoped for. The guy is just smart and though he's never going to be Bill, I have no doubt he is the man to lead Microsoft on it's next adventure. I was really hoping this would the be the case and his keynote at Mix affirmed that for me. The stuff he didn't say (but alluded to) was as important as the stuff he did talk about. I sense a revolution is happening behind the scenes in a post Windows and Office era. I also sense PDC this year is going to be amazing. Check out this quote from news.com which captured things nicely for me.

"For people who are trying to deliver software value on the Web and different devices, Microsoft will (now) get serious consideration," O'Kelly said. "This is a moment where it's clear Ray (Ozzie) is putting his signature on Microsoft."

  4. We put on a cool conference. Hats off to people like Jeff for their vision. The small details like the support for Twitter, the Mix07 beanbags, Elvis in the house and countless other things just made the difference. Oh and the party at Pure made the MEDC party look like kids stuff :)

  5. I met a tonne of cool people at this conference which is always a bonus

As soon as Mix08 is announced you should sign up. All the cool cats will be there.
