I'm not in the market for a new laptop but if I was buying one or recommending for family and friends the Vaio NR would definitely get a look in. In fact at least 3 friends have asked for recommendations recently so I may ping this their way. Why?
- I'm a Vaio fan - having had 2 on the trot now I've been pleased with performance, reliability and even driver availability which used to be an Achilles heel for Sony
- Style - whether we like or not, style is an increasingly bigger deal these days and lots of people want something that looks cool whether it's for work or play. The fashion traits of the mobile phone industry are fast coming to the PC industry. This Vaio has some really nice design touches and the fantastic X-black screen technology.
- Granted I could recommend a Macbook/Powerbook as they can run Vista now but having used one, it's still too much of a compromise for the Windows OS. Plus they're heavy and run hot!
- It has the same cool, chiclet keyboard that my Sony TZ has (same as Macbook)
- Price - £499 for a Vaio. WOW!

"it's still too much of a compromise for the Windows OS" could you give more detail pls? was thinking about using one solely in 'boot camp' configuration. the position of the ctrl key bugs me, but on the external keyboard it's lower left as expected. apart from that i couldn't see any downsides.Anonymous

howdy - it's hard to put my finger on it but the small things really like keyboard mapping is a frustration for me but also the lack of two button mouse on the trackpad. now I think about it, the hardware looks great but heat and weight are also two big issues for me along with battery life but that may be as I'm comparing it to an awesome Sony TZ which excels on all of these.Anonymous

Steve, having recently left the hallowed halls of Microsoft with its provision of free kit, I've just bought one of these, the NR11Z. It's a great machine: fantastic screen, crisp keyboard, solid build and a great look.Anonymous
