Zune microblogging

I got chatting with Ian Forrester last Friday night at the London Geek Dinner about Zune as we were thinking of ways Microsoft should be exposing out more of the assets of Live properties and other Microsoft software. Ian was saying how cool it would be to have Messenger publish more than just the current song you're listening to and even for Media Centre to do more such as publish the last tracks you listened to, favourites etc.

It was then I remembered an interview with J Allard where he talked about Zune doing some of this and it being a microblogging kind of thing. You can see from the Zune Card explanation above what he was alluding to. I have a Zune 8 and how have my own card that publishes all of this stuff - the downside being as Zune is US only right now it take a fair bit of fiddling for me to login etc.

Last.FM does more than this at the moment but maybe the combination of the device, pretty nice desktop software on the PC and a growing community may build a whole new asset here. There is a huge amount of potential that's for sure and Ian is right, we need to start thinking how we open up more assets like this.

Oh and I'm duty bound with my new gig to point out that this is another great example of Software + Services. Multi headed client (Zune, PC) connecting to a service in the cloud. Cool huh?
