Excel Crashes When You Enter Data in a Cell

We want to bring an emerging issue to your attention. We have found that in certain circumstances, Excel will crash when you type data into a cell and press <Enter>. The same crash may occur when you select data and click the Quick Analysis button. We are currently investigating the issue, but it has been confirmed to be related to Flash Fill and Quick Analysis, and it only occurs in 32-bit Excel. It most often occurs when data has been imported from OLAP data sources, and copied to a new location. If you look at the crash report, the crash application will be Excel.exe, and the Module will be listed as ntdll.dll.

We have a couple of workarounds:

Workaround 1:

  1. Click on File --> Options --> Advanced.
  2. In the Editing Options section, clear the checkbox for Automatically Flash Fill.
  3. Click on the General tab.
  4. Clear Show Quick Analysis options on selection.

Workaround 2:

  1. In your Data tab, click Connections.
  2. Click the Properties... button.
  3. Clear the checkboxes under OLAP Server Formatting.
  4. Import your data.

Either of these should temporarily resolve the issue. We will update this blog as new information becomes available. If this blog helps you resolve crashes in Excel, please leave a comment.

    Problem started June 24th 2013. Didn't even have to press enter, simply typing data into cell caused Excel to Crash. Workaround #1 worked for me

    I spoke too soon! I can enter data into any row, but cannot enter any data into any of the the rows below. I can select a cell with the mouse, but the minute I enter data via the keyboard, Excel crashes.

    Workaround 1 fixed my lockup issues in Excel. I'm running the following:

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 on a Macbook Pro
  • VMWare Fusion
  • Office Professional Plus 2013 x64 Excel would lock up constantly when I clicked to edit a cell or completed editing a cell (Enter or Tab).

    I have the same problem as Stewart.  As soon as I press any key to enter data in a cell Excel crashes and I receive a "Microsoft Excel has stopped working" message.

    The first workaround has worked for me so far.  On the 2nd workaround, I have no connections listed.  So, I assume this would not apply here.

    I have excel 2013 32 bit and have been having this problem for months, though it seems to have gotten worse with Fusion 6 and Mavericks.  I just found this and tried solution 1 which didn't work.  I didn't have any connections, so solution 2 wasn't valid. Turning off 3D graphics per the following link seems to have helped. communities.vmware.com/.../2238827 Any other recommendations are appreciated.

    I am Mrs MEG.I don’t no how to tell the word the greatest thing
    that happen in my life.I was so sick that i lose all the money
    I have in so many hospital still yet there was no solutions on
    till I go for blood test for different hospital almost five
    doctor told me I am H.I.V positive. & after then all hope I
    have was lost I was waiting the lord will called me. One nite
    I woke up in mind nite start crying so my mind told me to
    check in Google so I see many testimony further billow I was

    After being in relationship with PETER for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused.     Hi - I am still having this issue. I am using a new Macbook Pro with Windows 365 on VMWare Fusion with the spreadsheet saved to dropbox. Excel might work for 1 second or 1 minute, but always, always hangs and locks up just about everything that is open. Interestingly, Excel does work on the Mac version but sliding between screens is more than inconvenient. This makes me believe, though, that the issue is compatibility with Fusion. Are there any answers yet? Yes - I tried workaround 1 with no success.

    The problem that I experienced was with Excel 2013 and having one file open in Compatibility mode with a .xls extension and a second file I was editing in .xlsx. Upon editing a specific cell in the .xlsx file, Excel would crash. Resaving the .xls file as a .xlsx resolved the crash when editing the second file.

    Neither of these workarounds is working for me and I've reinstalled Excel 13 and it still crashes every time I try to change even one cell. This is a disaster.

    In my case there was a problem with files in the XLstart folder. In 20 years of using Excel I have never had an XLstart folder result in this sort of crash.

    Workaround 1 works great for me until now.
    I have an Acer laptop running Windows 8.1 64-bit. After I downloaded the Office 365 student pack (in 32-bit I don't know why) Excel wouldn't open any file which I solved by starting it one time only in administrator mode. It worked for one day and then it would always freeze after entering into a cell. It wouldn't happen anything until I clicked anywhere or closed it. Repairing, online repair or safe mode didnt't help. But workaround 1 now did the magic.

    This crash only occurred for one file I was trying to edit.

    Last month, it was my birthday, the anniversary of my late husband’s death, and a time when I experienced another loss in my family.     Last month, it was my birthday, the anniversary of my late husband’s death, and a time when I experienced another loss in my family. I was in total depression also because the gentleman I had been seeing for nearly a year decided to cut ties with me. All this happened at the same time, and my heart was broken.     Workaround 1 worked for new spreadsheets in one cell, does not work on other cells and does not work when editing an existing spreadsheet. Workaround 2 under Connections, nothing is listed.

    I still have this issue, already tried Workaround 1 & 2, uninstalled excel and reinstalled it. I even took the laptop to the "geek squad" from best buy, they reinstalled everything and still have the same issue with excel. It randomly happens after modifying a random cell, excel crashes, can anyone help?

    I have the same situation. when i was trying to enter data into cell the Excel was not responding. I restarted my PC, follow above mentioned fixes but these things not worked for me. Then i decided to repair MS office. I did it and opened my file but only single file was creating the issue. other files of MS Office were working very well. I posted my question on MSDN forum and someone said the file my be corrupted. I read lots of blogs and article and wasted my 3 days to find the issue but didn't get any clue. I jumped on a software which has the upload file option but i didn't get the repaired file till date.. :( My friend bought stellar excel repair software so she helped me to fix it.

    My excel does not have any File>options> menu. It is from 2002. I can't file my income taxes until this is fixed.
