Printing Services Firm Creates 1 Terabyte Data Warehouse with SQL Server 2005

WorkflowOne helps organizations as diverse as the American Red Cross, Roto-Rooter, and Toys “R” Us save on their printing costs by providing end-to-end solutions for printing projects, with services including design, sourcing, production, warehousing, marketing, fulfilment, and delivery. After acquiring another company, Relizon, WorkflowOne IT needed to create a centralized data store that would provide richer and more flexible reporting than what was available from its AS/400 systems. The company created an operational data store (ODS) using Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) and SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services running on an AMD Opteron™ based Egenera® BladeFrame™ system. The solution has worked so well that WorkflowOne plans to add multidimensional analytics using SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, and expand the ODS into a 1 terabyte data warehouse.

Scandinavian Airlines Moves Data Warehouse From Mainframe to SQL Server 2005

Scandinavian Airlines, which carries 40 million passengers a year, was a pioneering in generating business intelligence (BI) from its data to more efficiently meet customer needs. But its original data warehouse, which was deployed on an IBM mainframe and the DB2 database, had become expensive to run and maintain, and its batch-based system made it difficult to provide analysts and other users with the timely information they needed. After completing a successful proof of concept project, the company is moving its data warehouse to Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 Enterprise Edition hosted on HP DL585 servers with Intel Dual-Core Xeon 5170 processors. Micro Focus International, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, provided an emulation program for running extract, transform, and load processes that had been written in COBOL for the mainframe, simplifying the migration to SQL Server 2

White Paper: Business Intelligence Meets Business Process Management

Whether they involve distributing goods to customers, collaborating with suppliers, or coordinating the efforts of employees, business processes are the foundation on which rest a business’s products, services, and brands. They are the essential underpinning of an organization’s ability to function. In successful companies, business processes align resources to support the achievement of goals.

Business process management (BPM) is a methodology to ensure that those processes support a common set of goals and objectives. It involves automating and improving the effectiveness of process activities, tasks, and outcomes to accomplish particular business purposes. Its goals include not only efficiency and productivity, but also control, responsiveness, and improvement. Efficiency enables individuals to maximize the time they can devote to priority business tasks and to maximize throughput. Control assures that company resources are aligned optimally to execute strategies. Responsiveness and improvement support the competitive differentiation that enables a company to excel over others.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition Overview

A new generation of applications is on the horizon for businesses and consumers, driven by market changes such as a growing mobile workforce and its need for productivity even when not “connected.” This need is creating an explosive growth of new devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs), portable music players, and gaming consoles, creating exciting possibilities for new applications. These new applications place new demands on the data platform on which they are developed. To meet the needs of this changing application landscape, Microsoft introduces its newest edition of the SQL Server database product line—SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition—a maintenance-free, compact embedded database for single-user client applications for all Windows platforms, including tablet PCs, pocket PCs, smart phones and desktops. Compact Edition is available to deploy and redistribute free of charge. This white paper outlines the current business and consumer environment and the key factors that influence the need for this new generation of applications. It describes how SQL Server Compact Edition can be used to satisfy the data platform demands of these applications.

Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.0

SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard enables the deployment of SQL Server databases into a hosted environment on either a SQL Server 2000 or 2005 server. It generates a single SQL script file which can be used to recreate a database (both schema and data) in a shared hosting environment where the only connectivity to a server is through a web-based control panel with a script execution window. If supported by the hosting service provider, the Database Publishing Wizard can also directly upload databases to servers located at the shared hosting provider. Optionally, SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard can integrate directly into Visual Studio 2005 and/or Visual Web Developer 2005 allowing easy publishing of databases from within the development environment.

Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Services 1.0

SQL Server Database Publishing Services are ASP.NET web services designed for shared hosting providers to enable the deployment of SQL Server databases without directly exposing SQL Server to the Internet. This web service is designed to be used with the Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard Client (above).
